TUCSON, AZ, February 12, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present James Hays, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Hays celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Professor Hays was a faculty member in geological sciences at Harvard University for eighteen years. He was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, on July 10, 1933, and educated at Columbia (A.B. 1954), Caltech (M.S. 1961) and Harvard (Ph.D. 1966) before joining the faculty at Harvard where he advanced through the professorial ranks, becoming Professor of Geology in 1972 and Chairman of the Department of Geological Sciences (now Earth and Planetary Sciences) in 1980.
At Harvard, Professor Hays was a NASA Principal Investigator of the Apollo lunar samples and studied the stability and properties of minerals and mineral assemblages at high temperatures and pressures. He was a pioneer in the study of the kinetics of crystallization from silicate melts. Many of his students have gone on to distinguished careers in the earth and planetary sciences. He was one of the first members of the elected Faculty Council of the Harvard Faculty of Arts and Sciences and was a member of the Administrative Board of Harvard and Radcliffe Colleges. He chaired the faculty Committee on Experimental Geology and Geophysics.
Hays was a frequent advisor to NASA during the Apollo Program, serving on the astronaut training program, the Lunar Sample Analysis Planning Team, and the Lunar and Planetary Review Panel.
In 1982, Hays left Harvard to become Director of the Division of Earth Sciences at the National Science Foundation (NSF) where he also served as Senior Science Advisor to the NSF Director. He expanded the ways of doing earth sciences research in U.S. universities and colleges by creating new NSF programs in Continental Dynamics, and in Instrumentation and Facilities. These programs fostered the conduct of large-scale, cooperative field projects in geology and geophysics and the establishment of shared earth science research facilities such as the Global Seismic Network. Another new program in Hydrologic Sciences provided a better focus for hydrological research at the Foundation.
Hays was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the Harvard Society of Fellows, and a fellow of the Geological Society of America, the Mineralogical Society of America, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and was a life member of the American Geophysical Union. He received the Charles F. Rolker, Jr., Prize from Columbia University, an Outstanding Achievement Award from NSF, and a Presidential Rank Award from the U.S. government.
A Naval Aviator, he served in the U.S. Naval Reserve for 39 years, retiring in 1993 with the rank of Captain.
After retiring from NSF in 1995, he moved to Tucson, Arizona, becoming a Visiting Fellow in Geosciences at the University of Arizona. He is an active member of the Arizona Geological Society and the Tucson Audubon Society.
In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, James Hays, PhD has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
