Now retired after a long and successful tenure in education, Ms. McCollough began her career in 1960 as an English teacher at Mountain Lakes High in Mountain Lakes, New Jersey. She transitioned to higher education, teaching English at Barrington College in Barrington, Rhode Island, and then at Eastern College and Villanova University (where she was one of the first female instructors) in St. David's, Pennsylvania. After moving to New Jersey with her family, Ms. McCollough found success as the Director of the Resource Center for Learning Ministries for the Central Atlantic Conference of the United Church of Christ (UCC) In Montclair, New Jersey between 1975 and 1981. Then she moved into administration at Princeton University, first in the Department of Physical Planning, then as the Assistant Dean at the School of Engineering, and ultimately as the Manager of the History Department. After ten years at Princeton University, she made the transition to Mercer County Community College as an Associate Professor of English and the Assistant to the Vice President of Academic Affairs and ultimately to the President, retiring after ten years in 2000.
Involved with a broad range of civic organizations over the years, Ms. McCollough originally founded and served as the Chairperson of the Network of Directors of UCC Resource Centers from 1977 to 1979. She later served on the Board of Directors of the UCC Central Atlantic Conference in Catonsville, Maryland and on the New Jersey Council of Churches. She has served various roles in her local church in Princeton as a deacon, trustee, and moderator. While residing in the Philadelphia area, she sang in the Singing City Choir that performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra and was the first choir to perform "Messiah" in Israel. She has also sung with Princeton Pro Musica since 1975, performing major classical works. She and her husband Charles became trainers of leaders for the Association for Couples in Marriage Enrichment in Winston-Salem, North Carolina in 1980, leading retreat seminars all over the United States, including Hawaii, as well as Germany.
An alumna of Southern Methodist University, Ms. McCollough received a Bachelor of Arts in English and Education, cum laude, in 1959, followed by a Master of Arts in English in 1960. She received the prestigious "M" Award for outstanding scholarship and community service at SMU and was elected to Mortar Board, Sigma Delta Pi (Spanish Honorary) and Kappa Delta Pi (Education Honorary). She also was elected president of Kirkos (a scholastic and service honorary) and of her sorority Gamma Phi Beta. She later did postgraduate work at Princeton Theological Seminary between 1979 and 1981. and was commissioned as a Lay Leader in the United Church of Christ. She has maintained her membership with the American Federation of Teachers, the American Council of Education's National Identification Program for Women, The New Jersey Council of Churches, The Church and Ministry Commission of the New Jersey Association of the United Church of Christ, The Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, and The Association of United Church Educators.
Ms. McCollough wrote an adult curriculum in 1983, titled Always Growing Up! Since retirement she and her husband, Rev. Dr. Charles McCollough, have collaborated on writing nine books and doing presentations on combining religion and the arts. One, entitled Faith Made Visible: Shaping the Human Spirit in Sculpture and Word, uses sculptures by her husband. The others include Lifestyles of Faithfulness, The Morality of Power: A Notebook on Christian Education for Social Change, Heads of Heaven, Feet of Clay, To Love the Earth, Resolving Conflict with Justice and Peace, The Art of Parables: Reinterpreting the Teaching Stories of Jesus in Word and Sculpture and The Non-Violent Radical: Seeing and Living the Wisdom of Jesus (illustrated with CD). They have travelled extensively taking their presentations and sculptural exhibits throughout the United States, Germany, Australia, Scotland, Denmark, and the Czech Republic. She and her husband restored an 1840 house and farm in Hopewell, NJ beginning in 1974 and equipped it with solar panels (which fire Dr. McCollough's sculpture kiln). They reared their three children—Colin, Wendy, and Tim--there, attempting to maintain a sustainable lifestyle that cherished the earth. They enjoy organic gardening and at one time made their own wine. They enjoy entertaining and have art shows and poetry readings in their 18th century barn, which is used as a gallery and sculpture studio.
A 1960 graduate scholar of Southern Methodist University, Ms. McCollough is also a celebrated Marquis listee who has been showcased in the fifth edition of Who's Who in American Education, as well as the 18th, 19th and 22nd editions of Who's Who of American Women.
