Appointed Professor Emeritus when he retired from teaching in 2016, Dr. Emery taught Great Books in the Program of Liberal Studies and philosophy, theology and manuscript studies in the Medieval Institute at the University of Notre Dame for over 30 years. He has focused his research on the history of medieval philosophy and theology, as well as the critical edition of texts regarding those subjects. Dr. Emery previously found success at the University of Dallas, where he was a professor of English and director at the Center for Contemplative Studies, and at The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina, where he taught English and philosophy. Dr. Emery has continued his scholarly research and to serve as the director of the critical edition, "Ioannis Duns Scoti Reportatio Parisiensis super primum librum Sententiarum," which he has been since 2011.
A prolific author, Dr. Emery published the book "Renaissance Dialectic and Renaissance Piety," two volumes of "Dionysii Cartusiensis Bibliotheca Manuscripta," and the collection of his essays, "Scholastic and Mystical Theologies from the Later Middle Ages." He also edited the volume "Ioannis Duns Scoti Quaestiones super De anima," and served as the editor of the international journal "Bulletin de Philosophie Médiévale" between 2002 and 2016. In 2018, colleagues from Canada, Europe, Latin America and the United States honored Dr. Emery with the volume titled "Contemplation and Philosophy: Scholastic and Mystical Modes of Medieval Philosophical Thought - A Tribute to Kent Emery, Jr." Co-edited by Drs. Roberto Hofmeister Pich and Andreas Speer, the volume is a collection of essays by many scholars that are thematically connected through the work of Dr. Emery, to whom the volume is dedicated. A main focus of the book is the attempt to bridge the gap between mysticism and a systematic approach to medieval philosophical thought.
Dr. Emery is an alumnus of the University of Virginia, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in 1966. Shortly thereafter, he acquired a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Toronto in 1968 and 1976, respectively. To remain aware of developments in his field, Dr. Emery is a member of the Société Internationale pour l'Étude de la Philosophie Médiévale. Founded in 1958, the goal of the society is to promote the study of medieval thought.
Securing several research grants throughout his career from such organizations as the National Endowment of the Humanities, the Guggenheim Foundation, the American Council of Learned Societies and the German-American Academic Counsel, Dr. Emery also received fellowships from the Higher Institute of Philosophy, University of Louvain, in Belgium and the Institute of Philosophy, University of Warsaw, in Poland. A celebrated Marquis listee, he has been included in 65th through 70th editions of Who's Who in America. A pious adherent of his Christian faith, Dr. Emery has been married to his wife, Lucy, since 1965, and together they are the proud parents of six children.
