While still young in her practice, Dr. Ryan has been able to excel in her profession and flourish as an expert in her field in a short period of time. Dr. Ryan is a Primary Care Sports Medicine Physician who practices in the Baltimore region. She has been with Medstar Health since her training and currently sees a multitude of patients anywhere from newborns to geriatrics with a special interest in athletes and patients who like to be active no matter their age or goals. Dr. Ryan has excelled as a faculty member in the Family Medicine Department at Medstar Franklin Square where she works with faculty and residents in the same program to which she attributes so much of her personal and professional development. She is very enthusiastic about teaching and often works with residents, medical students, and even college students. Dr. Ryan is also a provider of Medstar Sports Medicine Group in which she has many roles, as well as a provider at Medstar Health Urgent Care centers.
Dr. Ryan has flourished as co-medical director for the Horsemen Health Program at Maryland race tracks and has helped to improve care for employees, trainers, grooms and especially jockeys at Laurel, Pimlico and Timonium Fairgrounds racetracks. She manages a multitude of injuries from horse bites to kicks, falls, and overuse injuries. She has been instrumental in developing one of the first concussion protocols in the United States for riders and recently spoke in Dubai at the International Conference for the Health, Safety and Welfare of Jockeys conference alongside other world leaders in jockey health. At the tracks, she has also helped to organize health fairs, sits as one of the directors of the safety committee and also has volunteered at numerous track community events. She co-authored an article in the Journal "Injury" on a sustainable structure for jockey data management for the North American horse racing industry. She has also lectured to racing officials at Racing Officials Accreditation Program for nearly 4 years, spoke at a meeting for the Association of Racing Commissioners International, the Jockey Guild national meeting and also at the Welfare and Safety of the Racehorse Summit, among many others. She seeks to bring the knowledge of the sports medicine world to the racetrack as well as educating other sports medicine providers about these very unique athletes.
While a significant amount of her sports medicine focus has been on improving rider safety, she also is an assistant team physician for Towson University, taking care of a multitude of athletes and providing coverage for Women's Basketball, Women's Gymnastics, Men's Rugby and Men's and Women's Lacrosse. She has acted as the assistant team physician for the Baltimore Brigade in the Arena Football League and recently began working as an assistant team physician for the Baltimore Orioles. She has worked with local high schools and athletic trainers volunteering for game coverage and enjoys being active in her community. Dr. Ryan has a passion for caring for runners and has played an important role in the running program for Medstar Sports Medicine by acting as the Medical Director for some running races, and assisting in, but not limited to, the Baltimore Marathon for more than 5 years and the Boston Marathon for more than 3 years.
Before embarking on her professional path, Dr. Ryan pursued an education at Villa Julie College, earning an Associate of Science in medical laboratory technology in 2004. She continued her academic efforts at the aforementioned university with a Bachelor of Science in biotechnology in 2006. During her time there she acted as a student editor and a PowerPoint developer for the supplemental CD for "Hematology in Practice" in 2007. Dr. Ryan concluded her studies at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2011, graduating with a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. She has returned on numerous occasions to her high school and college for career days and as a mentor to other students.
Following these accomplishments, Dr. Ryan trained at the MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center as a resident in family medicine from 2011 to 2014 and a chief resident between 2013 and 2014. She subsequently completed a fellowship with Primary Care Sports Medicine and the University of Maryland from 2014 until 2015. During this time, she conducted firsthand medical training with Loyola Blakefield, the University of Maryland, College Park, the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, Coppin State University and the Baltimore Ravens. Moreover, Dr. Ryan has been licensed in sports medicine by the American Board of Family Physicians since 2014.
Dr. Ryan has found success with her written works as well, authoring articles for Baltimore Marathon Running Magazine, numerous racing publications and grand rounds for MedStar Health between 2012 and 2014. Dr. Ryan has also been profiled in such publications as the Baltimore Sun, the Paulick Report, the Courier-Journal, the Blood Horse and the Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred magazine, among others.
She has been a lecturer for myriad conferences, meetings and summits since 2013, including those for the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, the Maryland Academy of Family Physicians, the Notre Dame School of Pharmacy, and the American Academy of Sports Medicine Physicians. Dr. Ryan has also provided her wealth of knowledge to Georgetown University School of Medicine teaching in the clinic and particularly teaching longitudinal curriculum students how to perform thorough musculoskeletal exams.
She attributes her love of sports and anatomy to her involvement in gymnastics at a young age, where she later coached for many years at Sokol Gymnastics. She also has coached lacrosse and played while she was in high school at Parkville High and later went on to play at Villa Julie College. She continues to keep her fitness level up and likes to live by the mantra "Practice What You Preach" and she herself have completed sprint triathalons, and multiple running races including half and full marathons.
In addition to her primary vocation, Dr. Ryan remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to her areas of expertise. The co-chair of the education committee for the Maryland chapter of the American Academy of Family Physicians, she has maintained her involvement with the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, the American College of Sports Medicine, and the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, for which she was recruited to the Safety and Integrity Alliance. From 2007 to 2015, Dr. Ryan was also associated with the American Osteopathic Association and the Maryland Association of Osteopathic Physicians, with which she was a student and resident representative on the board of directors.
In light of her exceptional undertakings, Dr. Ryan has accrued several accolades throughout her impressive career. She has been notably recognized for her exemplary life-saving efforts with a Proclamation from the board of directors of MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center for resuscitating a worker at the track who collapsed. Likewise, Dr. Ryan was presented with a Teaching Award from the School of Medicine at Georgetown University in 2017.
Attributing her success to her abiding dedication to hard work, her passion for learning, her desire to make a difference and her longstanding love for what she does, Dr. Ryan believes that her profession is not just a career, but a lifestyle.
Further influenced by Michael Turner of the British Horse Racing Authority, as well as many of her other primary care and sports medicine colleagues, she has a never ending desire to continue learning. Dr. Ryan looks forward to working in particular with industry leaders and other medical specialists in the horse racing world to continue to further medical care of jockeys including improving safety protocols and centralizing their medical information.
