SEATTLE, WA, February 18, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Dr. Susan P. Casteras with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Award for her many years of scholarly achievements, recognition for her teaching talents, leadership qualities, and other successes.
Dr. Casteras, Kollar Professor of American art, earned the title of professor emerita in late 2016, when she retired from the Art History division at the University of Washington in Seattle. During her tenure there, she taught many courses in American art, British art, art museums, women's studies, racial representation, and methodology. Previously she served from 1977-1996 as Curator of Paintings at the Yale Center for British Art and as a faculty member in the Art History department. A specialist in Victorian art and 19th century visual culture, especially Pre-Raphaelitism—a countercultural movement that aimed at reforming Victorian art and writing as well as concepts of realism, Dr. Casteras aimed during her long career at emphasizing an object-related approach to research. Her more recent projects have included topics such as fairy painting, Victorian history pictures, religious themes, Aestheticism, images of emigration, and constructions of race and labor. Dr. Casteras has been widely published, including more than eighty articles, reviews, essays, and books. She has served on the advisory boards of several journals as well as organized numerous exhibitions in the US and the UK. Moreover, she has participated in myriad symposia and conferences in her field. In addition, she has lectured extensively throughout the world, e.g., at the National Gallery in Washington, D.C., the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Tate Gallery and Victoria & Albert Museum, the Freer Gallery of Art, and the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University.
Prior to embarking on her professional journey, Dr. Casteras completed several advanced academic degrees and graduated Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa. She first acquired a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art History and another in English Literature (an historical first at Vassar College) before entering the doctoral program at Yale University, where she completed a Master's degree in art history in 1973, a Master of Philosophy in 1975, and a Doctor of Philosophy in the history of art in 1977.
A member or official in numerous professional organizations involving Victorian and British art, Dr. Casteras also won several fellowships from such distinguished organizations as the Danforth Foundation, the Woodrow Wilson Foundation, the American Council of Learned Societies, the National Endowment for the Humanities, The Fulbright Program, several Milliman Awards, and the Donald E. Petersen award for teaching excellence at the University of Washington. Some of her books have also received awards, among them a first prize for IMAGES OF VICTORIAN WOMANHOOD IN ENGLISH ART from Associated University Presses. Her current projects include a book on Victorian religious painting and another on the "Pre-Raphaelization" of modern visual culture from ca. 1975 to the present.
