Subsequently, Dr. Payne served as an assistant professor of surgery for the University of Pittsburgh from 1993 to 1997, an associate professor and the director of heart transplantation, surgery, and cardiovascular and thoracic surgery at the University of California, Irvine between 1991 and 1993, and in private practice with the Los Angeles Heart Institute.
Throughout his career, Dr. Payne has also gained valuable expertise in educational and medical positions with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the University of Pittsburgh, the University of California Davis Medical Center, the University of California Los Angeles and the Ohio State University. Additionally, his considerable expertise has allowed him to contribute to various patient care, quality resource and operating room committees at Westmoreland Regional Hospital and the Artificial Kidney Foundation of Orange County. Dr. Payne retains his professional alignment with the American College of Surgeons, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the International Society for Heart Transplantation, the Western Thoracic Surgical Association, the Nathan A. Womack Surgical Society and the Tucson Surgical Society, to name a few.
In pursuit of his career in medicine, Dr. Payne pursued an education at the Ohio State University, earning a Bachelor of Science in 1971. He continued his studies at the aforementioned university with a Master of Science in 1975 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1978. He concluded his academic efforts at the Ohio State University in 1979, graduating with a Doctor of Medicine. Dr. Payne also became certified in endoscopic vessel harvesting and intuitive robotic surgery for thoracic and cardiac surgery in addition to certifications from the American Board of Thoracic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery.
Due to his breadth of knowledge, Dr. Payne has co-authored such works as "The Risk of Stratification Using the Society of Thoracic Surgeons Program," "The Ultrastructural Autoradiographic Study of the Uptake D – Glucose by Developing Human Neutrophils" and "The Upstake and Intracellular Localization of Tritium Labeled Simple Sugars, Amino Acids, and 35-S Sulfate by Developing Human Neutrophils, An Aurodiographic Electron Microscopy Study." He has also had the honor of speaking at Saint Vincent Medical Center, the University of North Carolina Memorial Hospital and the Los Angeles Heart Institute's Cardiovascular Symposium.
