Howard Dalby White taught at Drexel University in Philadelphia for nearly three decades.

Now a professor emeritus since 2001, Dr. White taught at Drexel University in Philadelphia for nearly three decades. Hired by the College of Computing and Informatics (then the Graduate School of Library Science) in 1974, he later became a Drexel Distinguished Professor between 1998 and 2002, whereupon he retired. Earlier in his career, Dr. White worked in civil service for the U.S. Navy before deciding to return to school to pursue a degree in library science. Once in school, he quickly realized that he had a talent for research, which ultimately led to his attaining a doctorate degree and venturing into a career in academia.
Dr. White remains a visiting research professor at Drexel, where his studies have included the development of theoretical ties between information science and linguistic pragmatics. He has also been active in bibliometrics and citation analysis, especially the automatic visualization of term co-occurrence data. To remain aware of developments in his field, Dr. White is an active member of the Association for Information Science and Technology.
As a seasoned researcher in his field, Dr. White has written extensively, contributing more than 100 articles to various professional publications. He has written on such topics as collection evaluation, innovative online searching, evaluation of reference services, library publicity, and American attitudes toward library censorship. He has also written on social science data archives and on domain analysis in higher education. In 1992, Dr. White co-authored with Marcia J. Bates and Patrick Wilson "For Information Specialists: Interpretations of Reference and Bibliographic Work," and he subsequently authored "Brief Tests of Collection Strength" in 1995.
An alumnus of the University of Utah, Dr. White received a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1956. He later acquired a Master of Library Science in 1969 and a Doctor of Philosophy in librarianship in 1974 at the University of California Berkeley. Several years after completing his bachelor's degree, Dr. White served for two years in the U.S. Army between 1960 and 1962.
In 2005, Dr. White was awarded the Derek de Solla Price Memorial Medal by the International Society for Scientometrics and Informetrics. He previously received from the Association for Information Science and Technology its Award of Merit for lifetime achievement in 2004, its Best Paper Award, shared with co-author Katherine W. McCain, in 1998, and its Research Award in 1993. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. White has been featured in numerous editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, and Who's Who in the East.
