James Frederick Adams Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. James Frederick Adams was the recipient of the distinguished Alexander Meiklejohn Award from the American Association of University Professors in 1984.

An esteemed psychologist, academic administrator and educator, Dr. Adams led an impressive career which has spanned over 30 years. After completing his master's degree, he became a psychometrician for the Measurement and Research Center at Temple University. In his role, Dr. Adams was required to conduct educational and psychological measurement, or testing.

Dr. Adams subsequently contributed for three years as an assistant professor of psychology at Whitworth College before becoming a teaching and research associate at Washington State University, where he was working on his doctoral degree at the time. Over the next 30 years, he taught psychology and counseling courses and served as a coordinator of the division of educational psychology, the department chairman at Temple University, and taught psychology courses at the University of Puerto Rico and Catholic University in Puerto Rico. He was likewise a graduate dean and full professor of psychology in the graduate school at the University of Nevada. Dr. Adams ultimately retired as an academy vice president at Longwood College in Virginia in 1986 after serving for one year in his role.

Widely published, Dr. Adams authored his first book, "Problems in Counseling: A Case Study Approach," in 1962. Other books to his credit have included "Understanding Adolescence: Current Developments in Adolescent Psychology" in 1968, with a fourth edition arriving in 1980, and "Human Behavior in a Changing Society" in 1973. He published an exhibition catalogue with J. D. Selig, titled "Colonial Spanish Art of the Americas" in 1976. Dr. Adams' has further contributed chapters to books, articles to various professional journals, and tests and book reviews to professional publications.

Dr. Adams served as a corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps between 1945 and 1946. Shortly thereafter, he acquired a Bachelor of Arts in psychology at the University of California Berkeley in 1950, followed by a Master of Education in counseling and psychology at Temple University in 1951 and a Doctor of Philosophy in experimental psychology at Washington State University in 1959. Moreover, Dr. Adams was a certified psychologist in Washington and Pennsylvania, as well as a licensed psychologist in Pennsylvania.

To remain aware of developments within the field, Dr. Adams maintained his professional affiliation with several pertinent organizations. To wit, he was an elected fellow of the American Psychological Association, and a member of the Eastern Psychological Association, the Western Psychological Association and the Interamerican Society of Psychology. Dr. Adams was a member of the honorable societies of Sigma Xi and Psi Chi as well.

Renowned for his work, Dr. Adams received numerous grants between 1958 and 1972, was a University of Munich scholar in 1955 and a research fellow at Temple University in 1979. He was also the recipient of the distinguished Alexander Meiklejohn Award from the American Association of University Professors in 1984.
