Dr. Koths is a distinguished biotechnology expert whose interest in the field stems from an early age. Hailing from a family of scientists, he has a zeal for science that is only paralleled by his love for the arts. Realizing that he could postpone his artistic endeavors, he opted first to contribute to the scientific community by delving into applied medical research. After earning a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Harvard University in 1979, Dr. Koths was offered a position as a scientist with Cetus Corporation, one of the first biotechnology companies.
As his career progressed, Dr. Koths continued with Cetus Corporation as Director of Protein Chemistry, Senior Scientist, and then Senior Director of Discovery Research, until 1991, when the company was acquired by Chiron Corporation. For the next decade, he served Chiron Corporation as Director of Therapeutics Research. Since 2002, he has continued in his field as a biotechnology research and patent consultant, as well as an expert witness. Dr. Koths has contributed to more than 40 scientific publications and holds more than 40 issued U.S. patents in biotechnology.
An alumnus of Amherst College, Dr. Koths graduated magna cum laude in 1971 as an Independent Scholar in Biology. While working at Cetus, and to begin satisfying his fascination with the arts, he became a dance choreographer and caller for the Bay Area Dance Society, from which he received a Lifetime Membership Award. Dr. Koths is also a fly-fishing magazine writer and a published poet, having authored "One Good Turn: Poetry by Kirston Koths" through Blue Light Press. In recognition of his skills as a poet, he received the Blue Light Book Award and was nominated for a Pushcart Prize.
Among the many highlights of his career, Dr. Koths is proud of his role in producing the recombinant protein drug, Proleukin interleukin-2. Working with a team of Cetus scientists and clinicians, Dr. Koths was a key player in developing this bio-therapeutic drug, one of the first approved by the FDA for treatment of cancer by stimulating the human immune system. For this accomplishment, he earned a Lifetime Achievement Award from Chiron Corporation.
