Barbara Louise Godbold Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

In recognition of her achievements in the classroom, Dr. Barbara Louise Godbold was named as the Brick Township District Teacher and the Ocean County Teacher of the Year.

An accomplished listee, Dr. Godbold celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. Now retired from a successful teaching career, Dr. Godbold taught in Brick for nearly fifty years. Originally hired by the district in 1964 as a language arts and social studies teacher at the Upper Elementary School, she later taught English and social studies at Brick Township High School from 1967 until 1980 and served as English supervisor between 1980 and 1982. Following this appointment, Dr. Godbold taught English including AP English at Brick Memorial High School from 1983 to 2013. She also taught anthropology courses at Ocean County Community College for eight years beginning in 1974.

As a high school teacher, Dr. Godbold established a literary magazine that was published until she retired. In addition, she served as assistant adviser to the yearbook for fifteen years. She also conducted numerous district and departmental workshops on topics ranging from New Jersey Authors, Literature Across the Curriculum, and Literature Around the World to Stephen Crane: An American Original, Essentials of Poetry, and Mystery/Detective Writers. Furthermore, she presented assembly programs with her students on various literary topics including scenes from the short stories of Poe, from the plays of Shakespeare, and from great American novels. As a member of the New Jersey Classical Association, she spoke twice at the NJEA Convention in Atlantic City. Her topics (with supplemental booklets) were "Roman Emperors in Literature" and "Women in Classical Literature." As a member of the Ocean County Historical Society, she did a program on "Female Authors of New Jersey" and spoke at the New Jersey Historical Society on the "Great Influenza Pandemic of 1918 to 1920."

She has written newspaper articles on her travels and wrote "The Russians in New Jersey" for the Encyclopedia of New Jersey. Her doctoral dissertation was the Study of the Maintenance of Ethnic Identity in the Small Urban Community in which she contrasted the techniques used by six ethnic groups to preserve their identity. Among her professional memberships, Dr. Godbold has been a member of the National Council of Teachers of English, the National Council of Teachers of Social Studies, the NEA, the NJEA, the Ocean County Education Association, and the Brick Township Education Association.

Dr. Godbold graduated from Saint Rose High School as valedictorian. She later earned a Bachelor of Arts (magna cum laude with the highest average in her department) and a Master of Arts at Montclair State University in 1964 and 1967, respectively, as well as a Doctor of Education (with a straight A average) from Rutgers University in 1983. While attending college, Dr. Godbold was elected to Kappa Delta Pi (the education honor society) and Pi Gamma Mu (the social studies honor society). She studied abroad four times, twice at the Shakespeare Institute in Stratford-on-Avon and twice at Cambridge taking two summer programs in Social Studies Education and Victorian Literature. She is certified to teach social studies and English for grades 7-12 and is certified in supervision and as a school principal.

In recognition of her achievements in the classroom, she was named as the Brick Township District Teacher and the Ocean County Teacher of the Year. She was also featured in Northeastern University's Publication Teachers Make a Difference and has been profiled in three feature articles: "World's a Tool for this Teacher," "An Evening with Stephen Crane," and "Poe-pourri."

Dr. Godbold is a world traveler having visited all continents except Antarctica and fifty-five countries some multiple times. Wherever possible, she incorporated her travels into her teaching to bring novels set in other countries truly alive through her personal experience abroad and the different cultures she encountered.

In retirement, she is actively involved in a number of organizations. She volunteers for Caregivers, evaluates young adult books for the New Jersey Library Cooperative, conducts tours at the Ocean County Historical Society Museum for elementary students, is the historian for the Alpha Zeta chapter of ADK, belongs to a book discussion group at the local library, guest teaches at the high school from which she retired, is a member of the New Jersey Classical Association, and is a Eucharistic minister at her church.
