Dr. Appold is renowned as an educator and Lutheran pastor with more than 50 years of service to his students and congregation. He initially pursued an education at Concordia College, completing a rigorous six-year ministerial track in 1956. Dr. Appold conducted further postgraduate coursework at Washington University in Saint Louis before graduating from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis with a Master of Sacred Theology in 1962.
Initially intending to continue his studies in clinical psychology at the University of Minnesota, Dr. Appold was convinced by a friend in the ministry to enroll at Tübingen University in Germany. He was energized by the university's challenging academic culture, and following studies in New Testament theology under Professor Ernst Kӓsemann obtained a Doctor of Theology in 1976. During his time in Germany, Dr. Appold began his career as a student pastor at Cologne University from 1965 to 1966.
Upon his return to the United States, Dr. Appold flourished as the pastor of the Faith Lutheran Church and Campus Ministry of Kirksville, MO remaining in this position until 2002. Since 2002, he has excelled as the pastor of Saint Paul Lutheran Church in Memphis, MO. He was additionally active as an educator and visiting professor at the University of Iowa, Christ Seminary in St. Louis, Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago, and Concordia Seminary in Nagercoil, India. Furthermore, Dr. Appold found success as an adjunct associate professor in the Department of Philosophy and Religion at Truman State University from 1976 to 2018.
Moreover, Dr. Appold is a member of the American Academy of Religion and the Society for Biblical Literature, and an associate of the Park Ridge Center for the Study of Health, Faith, and Ethics. He has given presentations at twelve international meetings of the Society of Biblical Literature and many exegetical studies at national meetings of the SBL. For twenty summer Study Abroad courses he took students to Israel to work in the Bethsaida Archaeological Excavations project followed by additional travel in the Galilee, Jerusalem, and the West Bank and on an alternating basis travel in Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and Turkey. Notably, Dr. Appold has authored "The Oneness Motif in the Fourth Gospel," as well as numerous articles in the Bethsaida series, John, Jesus, and History in the SBL series, and Bethsaida in Archaeology, History and Culture in the Cambridge Scholars series.
