Dr. Birchler is renowned as a professor of biological sciences at the University of Missouri with more than 40 years of expertise in plant genetics. Adopting an early interest in science, he pursued an education at Eastern Illinois University, earning a Bachelor of Science in botany and zoology in 1972. Encouraged by an unsolicited letter of recommendation from a professor, Dr. Birchler pursued his studies at Indiana University, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in genetics and biochemistry in 1977.
From 1977 to 1981, Dr. Birchler began his career as a postdoctoral investigator at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He subsequently worked at the University of California Berkeley as a postdoctoral research affiliate in 1982 and an assistant research geneticist from 1983 to 1985. Following these appointments, Dr. Birchler began his independent career at Harvard University as an assistant professor from 1985 to 1987 and an associate professor from 1987 to 1991.
Dr. Birchler later joined the University of Missouri as an associate professor of biological sciences from 1991 to 1996, at which point he was appointed to the position of a professor. In 2009, he was designated as a Curators' Distinguished Professor in the Division of Biological Sciences at the aforementioned university.
Moreover, Dr. Birchler is a member of the Crop Bioengineering Center at Iowa State University and a member of the advisory board of the Max Planck Institute in Cologne, Germany. Extensively published and referenced, he is additionally active as a member of the editorial boards for Genetics, The Plant Cell, Chromosome Research, Cytogenetics and Genome Research, and Current Protocols in Plant Biology. He is the recipient of the 2020 Barbara McClintock Prize for Plant Genetics and Genome Studies and several awards for teaching from the University of Missouri. Likewise, Dr. Birchler is a fellow of the American Society of Plant Biologists, the National Academy of Inventors, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a member of the National Academy of Sciences.
