Ms. Susan Etelamaki was presented a First Place Ribbon in 2002 State DAR Poster Contest for her "9/11 Memorial" poster, a Blue Ribbon for a painting at the 2014 Marshall County Fair.
MARYSVILLE, KS, March 13, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Susan Etelamaki has been inducted into Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Ms. Etelamaki is renowned as a production potter with a background in visual arts instruction. She pursued an education at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, graduating in 1977 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Education and a Nebraska Teaching Certificate. Moreover, Ms. Etelamaki also held a Kansas Teaching Certificate after relocating to Kansas in 1986.
While enrolled at the University of Nebraska, Ms. Etelamaki attended ceramic and pottery classes, and immediately fell in love with the medium. She developed a particular interest in creative glazing and surface treatments, which would become a hallmark of her production work. Furthermore, Ms. Etelamaki is a Board member and secretary of the Marysville Chamber and Main Street Organization, secretary of the Retailer's Committee and Regent of Arthur Barrett Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, to which she's belonged 32 years.
Ms. Etelamaki initially taught fine arts at a rural K-12 school in northeast Nebraska for four years before meeting her husband, a math teacher, at another local school. They taught three more years before relocating to Kansas. Unable to secure employment as an art teacher, she substituted. During this time, she shifted her focus to production pottery. Ms. Etelamaki subsequently established South Hill Pottery in 1987, working out of her studio home and offering lessons in hand building and wheel throwing techniques. She taught in a 3-4 grade classroom for five years and worked in a nursing home for nine and a half years, all while teaching classes in art after school. In 2015, she expanded to an empty storefront in downtown Marysville. She continues to build her business and clientele, often having children of her earlier students.
Looking toward the future, Ms. Etelamaki hopes to continue running her storefront and focus on passing on her craft to students. She has passed her gifts on to her daughters, the oldest, a published writer and artist and the youngest, a graphic designer. Her work has been exhibited in a number of local competitions. Moreover, Ms. Etelamaki was presented a First Place Ribbon in 2002 State DAR Poster Contest for her "9/11 Memorial" poster, a Blue Ribbon for a painting at the 2014 Marshall County Fair, and made the only Commemorative Plate in the United States for the 2017 Total Solar Eclipse. Her "Eclipse Plates" are still sought after today.
