Ms. Lois Alba will be the Guest of Honor at a 2020 Gala hosted by Ars Lyrica Houston.

Ms. Alba is renowned as a vocal coach and a retired opera singer with more than 25 years of distinction in her field. Growing up in a family that prized music, she fell in love with opera after playing selections from "Aida" in a school play during her youth. Admitted to the Juilliard School as a teenager, she opted to initially pursue an education in the Mannes School of Music at the New School, where she completed coursework from 1945 to 1948. During the time, she was studying at Mannes, she also enrolled in an acting school which was from the Moscow Art Theater under Stanislavsky. Tamara Daykarhanova directed the curriculum and Ms. Alba felt that her training there was a great factor in how she approached the opera stage. Ms. Alba would later enroll at Juilliard, and was honored as the winner the first Southwest Region auditions for the Metropolitan Opera.
Ms. Alba credits her professional success to her time studying with her idols, Rosa Pontelle and Lotte Lehmann. From 1961 to 1971, she had appeared in operatic productions throughout the world, including Germany, France, and several major Italian cities. Entering private practice as a vocal coach in 1973, Ms. Alba has notably worked with ILLAR and the Alberta Masiello Metropolitan Opera.
Ms. Alba further flourished as the producer and the director of Opera Rediviva and Black Tie Opera Ensembles in Houston from 1993 to 1995. She is additionally active as the co-founder of Opera in the Heights, where she served as the artistic director from 1996 to 1998. Moreover, Ms. Alba is the host and namesake of the Lois Alba Aria Competition, sponsored by the Soma International Foundation.
Ms. Alba's personal music performances have included appearances with the Houston Symphony conducted by Leopold Stokowski, and production credits on the 1988 one-woman show "The Odyssey of Opera." Likewise, she is the author of "Diary of a Woman's Life" in 2001 and "Vocal Rescue" in 2005.
