Dr. Gerson is the Asa and Patricia Shiverick-Jane B Shiverick (Tripp) Professor of Hematological Oncology and Case Western Reserve University Distinguished University Professor. Additionally, he has worked at the School of Medicine at the aforementioned university as a professor of medicine, oncology and environmental health sciences since 1994, the chief of the division of hematology and oncology since 1995 and a member of the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center since 1985. Previously, he served the School of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University in a number of capacities, including as the associate director of the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center from 1995 to 2004, an associate professor of environmental health sciences from 1991 to 1994, an associate professor of medicine from 1988 to 1994 and an assistant professor of medicine and oncology from 1983 to 1988. Dr. Gerson began his career as an intern, a resident in internal medicine and a fellow of hematology and oncology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania from 1977 to 1983.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Gerson pursued an education at Harvard University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in biochemical sciences, magna cum laude, in 1973. He concluded his studies at Harvard Medical School in 1977, graduating with a Doctor of Medicine, cum laude. Following these accomplishments, Dr. Gerson was certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in internal medicine, hematology and medical oncology.
Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Dr. Gerson has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. A local board member for the American Cancer Society (ACS) and the Association of American Cancer Institutes (AACI), he has contributed to the science advisory board for the Edison Biotechnology Institute at Ohio University in 1994 and Osiris Therapeutics from 1994 to 1999. In 1985, Dr. Gerson held the position of the chairman of the pilot review committee for the American Cancer Society. He serves on the Executive Advisory Board of 12 NCI designated cancer centers - Herbert Irving Cancer Center of Columbia University, Stanford Cancer Center, UT Southwestern Cancer Center, Baylor College of Medicine Cancer Center, Moffitt Comprehensive Cancer Center, Masonic Minnesota Comprehensive Cancer Center, Rutgers NJ Cancer Institute, Fox Chase Cancer Center, University of Virginia Cancer Center, Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Center, University of Chicago Cancer Research Center, Holden, Iowa Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Dr. Gerson found success with his written works as well, having authored more than 279 abstracts, 37 book chapters, and 279 published articles, including "Addition of Proximal Intervention to Carotid Endarterectomy Increases Risk of Stroke and Death." Holding 22 patents in his areas of research, he has additionally co-authored "Gene Therapy of Cancer" in 1998. Dr. Gerson further flourished as the co-editor of such textbooks as "Gene Therapy of Cancer Transnational Approaches from Preclinical Studies to Clinical Implementation 3" and "Clinical Hematology."
In addition to his primary vocation, Dr. Gerson remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. From 2016 to 2018, he had maintained his involvement as the president of the Association of American Cancer Institutes. A senior member of the National Academy of Inventors, he is also a member of the American Society of Hematology and the American Society for Clinical Investigation. Moreover, Dr. Gerson is a member of the Association of American Physicians and the American Association for Cancer Research.
In light of his exceptional undertakings, Dr. Gerson has accrued several accolades throughout his impressive career. A scholar of the Edward Mallinckrodt, Jr. Foundation in 1987, he was recognized with the Honorary Alumnus of the Year Award from the Case Western Reserve University Alumni Association in 2008 and the Medal for Excellence in Health Science Innovation from Case Western Reserve University in 2012. Furthermore, he was presented with the Maurice Salzman Award for Distinguished Service from the Mount Sinai Health Care Foundation in 2007, the Heroes of Hope Award from the American Cancer Society in 2008, the Dr. Rogers Prize from the Lotte and John Hecht Memorial Foundation in Canada in 2011 and the John H. Budd, MD Distinguished Member Award from the Academy of Medicine Education Foundation in 2015. Honored among America's Top Doctors by Castle Connolly from 2008 to 2015, Dr. Gerson was selected for inclusion in the 18th edition of Who's Who in the World and multiple volumes of Who's Who in America.
Attributing his success to his ability to listen and his focus, Dr. Gerson notably invented gene therapy utilizing Mesenchymal stem cells and bone marrow transplantation of Mesenchymal stem cells. Proud of his recognition of DNA damage and repair as therapeutic targets, especially as it relates to new therapies for cancer, he was initially drawn to his field by the opportunity to translate a fundamental interest in scientific discovery towards an individual patient population benefit.
