Dr. Pestell is an oncologist, endocrinologist and is currently President of the Pennsylvania Cancer and Regenerative Medicine Research Center (PCARMRC) in Doylestown, PA, Blumberg Distinguished Professor of Translational Medical Research at the Baruch Blumberg Institute, and member of the Wistar Cancer Center Philadelphia, PA., USA (Affiliate). PCARMRC is part of an international hub-and-spoke model for regenerative medical inquiry, spearheading research and collaborating with similar centers around the world including the Karolinska Institute, Weizmann Institute and the European Cancer Stem Cell Research Institute.
A former Executive Vice president and Professor at Thomas Jefferson University, Dr. Pestell was the Director of the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA, and the founder of the Center to Eradicate Health Care Disparities (2005-2015). Prior to these appointments he was Director of the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, Georgetown University, Chairman of the Department of Oncology and Associate Vice President of the Medical Center (2002-2005). He was a visiting professor within the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine at Nanyang Technological University and the University of Melbourne.
Throughout his career, Dr. Pestell's research in cancer metastasis, cell cycle, prostate cancer, oncology and stem cells has been highly cited. In addition to publishing his book on Prostate Cancer, he has contributed 26 chapters and approximately 600 articles and 200 abstracts published in Cell, Science and Nature Medicine. Dr. Pestell was responsible for establishing the first free screening clinic for breast cancer in Washington, DC (2003). He built new programs in health care disparity that have had a sustainable impact on the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center in Philadelphia PA. Furthermore, he has received more than $85 million in grant support by the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health, the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, the Falk Foundation and other agencies for cancer research. He has been a strong advocate for basic and clinical research both within in the USA and abroad. He provided expert testimony to the Expert United States Senate, (Committee on Appropriations, Subcommittee on Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies), (2009) on the importance of the USA led research to impact disease in the world.
Dr. Pestell has served on several Boards (Georgetown University Hospital, CytoDyn Inc., Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, Cancer Prevention and Research Foundation, Basser Research Center University of Pennsylvania, Georgetown University Center for Australia- US Studies), advisory boards to both USA (NCI Cancer Centers), including Howard University, the Hollings Cancer Center, University of Hawaii Cancer Center, The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio Cancer Center, Cancer Institute of New Jersey) and International Centers (Breakthrough UK, Institute of Bio-Organic Chemistry), more than 20 funding agencies and 14 Editorials boards. Dr. Pestell is a fellow of the American College of Physicians, the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and the Royal Society of Medicine, an honorary lifetime member of the Wyvern Society. He is a longstanding member of the American Society for Investigative Pathology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and the American Society for Microbiology, among others.
The recipient of numerous national and international awards and recognitions, Dr. Pestell received the Jamie Brooke Lieberman Remembrance Award for his discoveries in the field of cancer metastasis from the Susan G. Komen in 2016, an Eric Susman Prize in Medicine from the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2015, and the Advanced Global Australian Award in 2014. Dr. Pestell notably received a Neal Hamilton Fairley Fellowship and was the Winthrop Fellowship awardee of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.
A native of Perth, Western Australia, Pestell is the great grandson of Albert "Texas" Green, MP., Minister for Defence under the Scullin Government. Dr. Pestell received a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Western Australia School of Medicine. He soon after completed a Doctor of Philosophy and Doctor of Medicine at the University of Melbourne. He also holds a Master of Business Administration (NYU). He became a postdoctoral clinical and Research Fellow in Medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital and a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He received an honorary doctorate from the University of Western Australia in 2008 and an honorary Doctor of Medical Science from the University of Melbourne in 2016.
