He initially pursued an education at Cambridge University, earning a Master of Arts in 1960 before obtaining a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery in 1962 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1965. As a newly-licensed doctor, Dr. Potts often treated patients recovering from poorly-performed extramedical abortions, and developed a passion for providing accurate and accessible family planning resources to his patients regardless of their marital status.
From 1969 to 1978, Dr. Potts began his career as the medical director of the International Planned Parenthood Foundation in London. He further flourished as the president and the chief executive officer of Family Health International in Research Triangle Park, NC, in 1978, where he would remain in practice until 1990. Since 1990, Dr. Potts has excelled as the Bixby professor of population and family planning at the University of California School of Public Health. He is the co-founder of Cadence Health, a pharmaceutical company that is switching oral contraceptives from prescription to over-the-counter sale.
Dr. Potts has been additionally active as the author of several works on obstetric practice and the cultural history of sexuality, including "Sex and War: how Biology Explains Warfare & Terrorism and offers a Path to a Safer World" in 2008 and "Textbook of Contraceptive Practice" in 1967. Noted for his research covering developments in maternal mortality, contraceptive safety and abortion practice, his current practice focuses on working with victims of wartime sexual violence in Northern Nigeria and Southeast Asia to provide contraceptive information, abortion and family planning services, and educational outreach. A fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. Potts was notably presented with the Hugh Moore Award from Population Action International.
