Dr. Speidel has earned distinction with the title of a professor emeritus of history at the University of Hawaii. His interest in history and archaeology developed when his family moved to Switzerland as a child, and he encountered ruins dating back to the Roman Empire during a hike. Dr. Speidel earned a Doctor of Philosophy at Freiburg University, Germany, in 1962, and relocated to the United States in 1968.
From 1962 until 1965, Dr. Speidel found success as a lecturer at Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok. He became the director of the language branch at the Goethe Institution of Montreal between 1965 and 1968, when he began his career with the University of Hawaii. Since 1968, he worked as a professor of history at the aforementioned institution, and served as the chairperson of the school's history department in 2000. Dr. Speidel was granted professor emeritus status in 2015.
Dr. Speidel has been a visiting professor at the University of Vienna, and the University of South Africa. He is the author of ten books, including "Riding for Caesar," published in 1994, and is the editor of the "Mavors" series. Dr. Speidel was the first scholar to publish an inscription mentioning the ancient Romanian King Decebalus, an accomplishment he recalls as a career highlight. He is a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute.
