Possessed by an innate desire to grasp the natural workings of the world, Dr. Swarthout most recently affiliated in the field of botany as an assistant professor at Hope College between 2001 and 2009. During this time, she also gained valuable expertise as a visiting faculty scholar for Michigan State University, where she performed physiological research on chloroplast ultrastructure and photosynthesis in Arabidopsis. Today, Dr. Swarthout excels as a part-time resident assistant for American House Senior Living Communities, where she began in 2019.
While coming of age, Dr. Swarthout was always fascinated by the local botanical garden near her home, captivated by the many shapes and colors of the plants. As an adult, she decided to pursue botanical research, leading her to receiving a Doctor of Philosophy in ecology and evolutionary biology from the University of Kansas in 1999. While pursuing her doctorate, she worked in a stable isotope laboratory that used vacuum lines to distill water from plant material and subsequently convert the water to carbon dioxide and hydrogen gas. Occasionally, Dr. Swarthout also helped to extract cellulose from plant material for carbon, oxygen and deuterium stable isotope ratio analysis.
Prior to traveling to the U.S. to complete a doctoral degree, Dr. Swarthout earned a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science from the University of Cape Town in South Africa in 1990 and 1993 respectively. In 2022, she likewise aims to complete a Master of Science in health analytics at Northwestern University. In order to remain aware of changes in the field, Dr. Swarthout aligns herself with the American Society of Plant Biologists and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Throughout her career, Dr. Swarthout has also given back to her community via the Fayetteville Public Library, where she has taught children how to read, the Michigan Lakeshore Aquatics Swim Club and Harbor Lights Middle School. For her outstanding work, she won the Second Place Video Award for "From Flowers to Seed" through the American Society of Plant Biologists in 2010. In the near future, Dr. Swarthout aspires to work as a consultant in botany and data analytics.
