She graduated from Briarcliff College with a Bachelor of Science in Education and English. She subsequently earned a Master of Science in Education at the University of Pennsylvania.
Ms. Barney began her career as a second grade teacher at the Episcopal Academy in Merion, Pennsylvania. Over the years she became an active volunteer in such organizations as the Junior League, the Council on World Affairs, and International Visitor Centers. She was President of the International Visitor Centers in Cleveland, Ohio and Newport, Rhode Island.
Ms. Barney found further success as the editor for The Diplomat: The Newsletter for International Business and Protocol, published from 1990 to 1997. Following that she began to write and publish guidebooks and cookbooks. Notably, she is the author of six cookbooks, including "The Enchanting World of Food" that covers the history of every cuisine in the world, the dining etiquette, and recipes contributed by ambassadors, their chefs and her international friends. Other cookbooks and guidebooks include "God's Bounty: 365 Days of Inspirational Cooking"; "Chesapeake's Bounty"; "Chesapeake's Bounty II"; New England's Bounty"; "Nantucket's Bounty"; "The Eastern Shore of Maryland: The Guidebook"; "Maryland's Western Shore: The Guidebook"; and "Annapolis: The Guidebook". In addition she was the editor of "Uniquely Delaware" and "Uniquely Rhode Island". She has garnered much acclaim for her signature narrative style, which places recipes in a larger regional and historical style.
Ms. Barney founded the John Hay Forum for the Cleveland Council on World Affairs; the Secret Garden Tour of Annapolis for the Hammond-Harwood House; and the Kitchen and Garden Tour of Easton, MD. She is an active member of Christ Episcopal Church, Easton and THIS for Diplomats, Washington, DC; on the Board of Mid-Atlantic Symphony and the National Society of Colonial Dames of America in Maryland. Ms. Barney was elected to the National Society of Colonial Dames of America's Roll of Honor, the highest honor for a Dame.
