Dr. Marcia Haskel Shapiro is the recipient of the 2019 FLASHA Clinical Career Award in Speech Pathology, and has been nominated for several other career awards for her research contributions.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts in speech pathology from Hunter College, and earned a Master of Arts in Deaf education at New York University in 1983. Dr. Shapiro attained a second Master of Arts in in speech pathology at the University of Central Florida in 1991, and was awarded with a Doctor of Philosophy in speech pathology from Barrington University in 2000.
From 1983 until 1984, Dr. Shapiro was a deafness instructor at the School for the Deaf and Public School #44. She later became a speech pathologist at the Saint Francis De Sales School for the Deaf between 1984 and 1986, and Seminole County Schools for the 1986-1987 academic year. Likewise, Dr. Shapiro maintained activity as a speech pathologist for Lake County Schools from 1987 to 1989, and Orange County Public Schools from 1989 until 1999.
Dr. Shapiro entered her field in 1991 as a clinical speech pathologist for the West Volusia- Fish Memorial Hospital and CMS Therapies of Central Florida, where she remained until 1994. She continued her career at the ORMC Level One Trauma Center from 1993 to 1994, and at the Orlando Health and Sand Lake Hospital between 1994 and 1998. Dr. Shapiro was subsequently named as the head of the swallowing department at Leesburg Regional Medical Center in 1995.
From 1998 until 2008, Dr. Shapiro held the position of a flex speech pathologist at Florida Fish Memorial Hospital. Since 1995, she has found success as the director of speech pathology services at AdventHealth Waterman Hospital. Moreover, she has contributed to several international studies on dysphagia in stroke patients and is the former vice president of FLASHA's Continuing Education board. Eminently accomplished in her field, Dr. Shapiro is the recipient of the 2019 FLASHA Clinical Career Award in Speech Pathology, and has been nominated for several other career awards for her research contributions. Eager to remain aware of developments affecting the industry, Dr. Shapiro has maintained her membership with the American Annals of the Deaf and the Convention of American Instructors of the Deaf.
