Dr. Robertson is renowned as a toxicologist and educator with more than four decades of expertise in environmental toxicology and contamination to his credit. Initially obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry from Stetson University, he graduated with a Master of Science in microbiology at the University of Florida in 1971. He concluded his academic efforts at the University of Michigan, earning a Master of Public Health in 1972 and a Doctor of Philosophy in environmental health sciences in 1981 with research carried out at the University of Guelph with Professor Stephen Safe. Dr. Robertson is a diplomate of the Academy of Toxicological Sciences.
From 1981 to 1982, Dr. Robertson began his career as a research associate at Texas A&M University. He subsequently worked as a project leader "Early stages of carcinogenesis" with Professor Franz Oesch at the University of Mainz, Germany, from 1983 to 1986, at which point he accepted a position with the University of Kentucky as an associate professor of toxicology. Dr. Robertson further flourished as a professor at the University of Kentucky in 1996, which appointed him as the director of the Superfund basic research program in 1997.
Since 2003, Dr. Robertson has excelled as a professor in the department of occupational and environmental health at the University of Iowa College of Public Health. He has also found success with the aforementioned school as the director of the graduate program in human toxicology since 2007. He has been additionally active as the director of the Iowa Superfund program since 2006. A member and a former regional chapter president of the Society of Toxicology, Dr. Robertson has accepted grants from the EPA, the National Institutes of Health, and NATO, with a body of research focused on polyhalogenated aromatic hydrocarbon toxicity.
