Now a distinguished chair in gynecological oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center since 2012, Dr. Gershenson is an expert in ovarian cancer who worked and taught at the university for over 20 years. His inaugural role was that of an associate professor of gynecology and the associate dean of the University of Texas MD Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute in Houston in 1979. Subsequently, Dr. Gershenson found success in numerous other positions, notably as the chairman of the department of gynecological oncology, the director of the Blanton-Davis Ovarian Cancer Research Program and the Ann Rice Cox chairman in gynecology.
Continuing to conduct clinical and translational studies with colleagues at MD Anderson and elsewhere in retirement, Dr. Gershenson's personal research has been focused on ovarian cancer. In collaboration with several clinical and basic science colleagues, he has conducted various clinical and translational studies on rare ovarian tumors. He has also served as a principal investigator and a co-principal investigator of clinical trials focused on novel therapies for patients with low-grade serous carcinoma of the ovary. Further, Dr. Gershenson was active as a co-principal investigator for M.D. Anderson's NCI-funded SPORE in Ovarian Cancer.
Throughout his career, Dr. Gershenson has built a prolific career with multiple committees, including the gynecological cancer steering committee for the National Cancer Institute, as co-chair of the SPORE executive committee and chairman of the rare tumor working group of the Gynecological Oncology Group. He also excelled as the chairman of the GOG's rare tumor committee, during which time the committee completed patient accrual on a clinical trial of a novel targeted agent, a MEK inhibitor, for women with recurrent low-grade serous carcinoma of the ovary. Additionally, Dr. Gershenson chaired the Foundation for Women's Cancer (formerly the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation), a national foundation of the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists, whose major missions include research grant funding and public education and awareness of gynecologic cancers.
Receiving a bachelor's degree at the University of Pennsylvania in 1967, Dr. Gershenson later attained a medical degree at Vanderbilt University in 1971. He also held the rank of a major in the U.S. Air Force between 1975 and 1977. A diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics-Gynecology, Mr. Gershenson has held professional affiliation with the American Board of Gynecological Oncology and the National Board of Medical Examiners. A prolific author, Dr. Gershenson has published several peer reviewed articles and a chapter in the 2018 book "Principles and Practice of Gynecologic Oncology." He has also authored or edited a dozen other books on gynecological oncology, cancer, and related topics, and served as the editor-in-chief of Gynecological Oncology, one of the major scholarly journals in his field, from 1990 to 2007.
Dr. Gershenson has held leadership roles in numerous national and international organizations. He is a past president of the Society of Gynecological Oncologists, the American Radium Society, and the Felix Rutledge Society. He served in numerous other capacities with the American Board of Obstetrics-Gynecology and the American Society of Clinical Oncology. Dr. Gershenson remains a member of the International Society of Gynecological Pathology, the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics, the Texas Association of Obstetrics and Gynecologists, among others.
In 2014, Dr. Gershenson was presented with the Award for Excellence by the International Gynecology Cancer Center. The honor recognized his advancement of scientific knowledge, specifically of rare nonepithelial ovarian cancers, his unique breadth of experience, and his collaborative and consultative efforts with experts around the world. Other awards include a 2015 Distinguished Service Award from the Foundation for Gynecological Oncology, a 2017 Distinguished Service Award from the Society of Gynecological Oncology, and a Distinguished Alumnus Award from Vanderbilt School of Medicine in 2018. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Gershenson has been featured in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
