Ms. Welborn is a registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator who has served her patients for more than 25 years. After deciding to leave nursing school, she pursued a career in nutrition with a focus on preventive medicine. She conducted her formal education at the University of North Carolina, earning a Bachelor of Science in nutrition in 1982 and a Master of Education in nutrition in 1992. Throughout her work in various jobs as a Randolph County WIC/county nutritionist from 1985 to 1992, WIC director and a community nutritionist serving the Randolph area, food service director, college instructor, hospice consultant and inpatient clinical nutritionist, she started specializing in the field of diabetes. Striving to increase her skills & knowledge in the area of diabetes, she became passionate about helping others manage their diabetes after seeing horrible complications with the disease.
After becoming a national certified diabetes educator (now called a diabetes care and education specialist) in 1999, she attended conferences, and pursued a variety of educational resources, even training with the International Diabetes Association in San Jose, CA.
Developing compassion for diabetes complications in her patients, Ms. Welborn is responsible for the development of the American Diabetes Association's National Certified Diabetes Program at Chatham Hospital in Siler City, NC. Likewise, she is active in legislative outreach related to diabetes and obesity prevention. A member of the Academy of Nutrition/Dietetics, and the American Association of Diabetes Educators, she strove to enrich her expertise in nutrition and diabetes by traveling abroad with delegations to China in 2005 and 2008 with the non-profit organization People to People. The US and China collaborated to share latest information in the field of nutrition/diabetes.
Ms. Welborn volunteers for the American Diabetes Association as a diabetes advocate on a local as well as national level. She is incredibly proud to help patients develop effective nutrition/diabetes care strategies and access care that improves or restores their quality of life.
