Dr. Rowlingson was an anesthesiologist and educator who spent 40 years in his field. Retiring in 2018 as a Professor Emeritus with the School of Medicine at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, he taught various courses in anesthesiology. He was notably awarded the Cosmo A. DiFazio Professorship in Anesthesiology in 2005. Becoming a faculty member in 1978 after completing his residency and fellowship with the university the previous year, he quickly became renowned for his teachings within the department, as well as nationally and internationally. For 29 years he was dedicated to the education of fellows as the director of the pain management fellowship program. Dr. Rowlingson was also instrumental in establishing national pain program guidelines and was the director of the Pain Management Center nearly 20 years. He also taught regional anesthesia while on the operating room assignments.
An accomplished author in his field, Dr. Rowlingson co-authored his first book "Regional Anesthesia: Techniques and Clinical Applications" with Harold Carron and Gregg A. Korban in 1984. He was a co-editor of the Handbook of Critical Care Pain Management in 1993. He started service on the editorial board of Anesthesia Analgesia in 1996 and of Regional Anesthesia & Pain Medicine in 1997. An elected fellow of the American College of Anesthesiologists, he is also a member and former president of the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine and the Virginia Society of Anesthesiologists. Dr. Rowlingson is also a longtime member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the International Anesthesia Research Society, the American Pain Society, the International Association for the Study of Pain and the American Academy of Pain Medicine.
For excellence in his career, Dr. Rowlingson received a fellowship from the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living and Rehabilitation Research from 1983 to 1987 and a pain fellowship from 1977 to 1978. He later received a Nils Lofgren Award from ASTRA in 1999. A decade later, the Rowlingson Lectureship in Pain Medicine was established in his honor in 2009. Honored by the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine, he received a Distinguished Service Award and the Bonica Lecture in 2007 and a Labat Award in 2015. Dr. Rowlingson has been cited in more than 50 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the South and Southwest and Who's Who in the World.
Born in Syracuse, New York, Dr. Rowlingson always knew that he wanted to be a doctor. At first, he thought he would follow his father's lead and become a general practice physician, but his father encouraged him to find a specialization. After completing Bachelor of Science at Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania, in 1970, he went on to earn a Doctor of Medicine at the University at Buffalo in New York in 1974. After internship at the Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital in Buffalo, New York, from 1974 to 1975, he completed his residency in anesthesiology at the University of Virginia from 1975 to 1977 and a pain management fellowship at the University of Virginia Medical Center from 1977 to 1978. Furthermore, Dr. Rowlingson is a diplomate of the American Board of Anesthesiology and an early member to achieve the specialization in Pain Management from the ABA.
