Having accrued more than 50 years of inimitable experience as an author and journalist, Mr. Levine has garnered a laudable reputation as a freelance writer on behalf of such prestigious publications as Esquire, Harper's, Rolling Stone, Mother Jones, The Atlantic Monthly and The New York Times, among others. He worked in an official capacity for Esquire from 1982 until 1986 as a contributing editor and columnist, and served in staff and editorial positions with the Saturday Review and Newsweek, the latter of which he served as an editor in the international department on Eastern European affairs between 1966 and 1968. Eager to parlay his expertise to others, Mr. Levine taught as an adjunct professor at the Graduate School of Journalism at the University of California Berkeley from 1987 to 1990.
A riveting author as well as a journalist, Mr. Levine earned distinction in 1982 for the release of his true crime novel, "Bad Blood: A Family Murder in Marin County." Detailing the double homicide of Jim and Naomi Olive, victims of the so-called "barbecue murders" in 1975, the book was notably well-received by Rolling Stone, Kirkus Reviews and The New York Times. Likewise, he has written such works as "Catch and Other Poems," and "The Man Who Gave Away His Organs: Tales of Love and Obsession at Midlife" in 2015. In recognition of his talent, Mr. Levine was a finalist for the Eric Hoffer Book Award in Fiction and the Lascaux Prize in Poetry, both in 2016.
Prior to embarking upon his professional journey, Mr. Levine pursued a formal education at Wesleyan University, from which he attained a Bachelor of Arts in literature in 1963. Continuing his academic efforts at Columbia University, he studied Slavic languages and literature at the school's Russian Institute, where he earned a Master of Arts in 1966. During this time, Mr. Levine undertook a Fulbright scholarship, which saw him study at the University of Warsaw and the University of Krakow, now Jagiellonian University, in Poland.

In accounting for his success, Mr. Levine credits the tutelage of his mentors: David Halberstam, an American journalist and historian best known for his work during the Vietnam War and civil rights movement, and Willie Morris, a fellow author and editor. Now departed, both men were instrumental to the younger man's development as a writer and journalist. Outside of his professional circles, Mr. Levine enjoys such avocations as reading, traveling, and collecting art.
Richard Michael Levine was born in Brooklyn in 1942, the eldest of three children of Bernard Levine, a businessman, and Gertrude Cohen Levine, a homemaker. When he was five years old, the family moved to Great Neck, New York, and he graduated from Great Neck North High School in 1959. In 2002 he married poet and writer Lucille Lang Day, and they reside in Oakland, California.
