Marquis Who's Who Honors Dr. Phyllis G. Supino for Excellence in Medical Research and Education



    WESTWOOD, NJ, April 09, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Phyllis G. Supino has been included in Marquis Who's Who. With more than 45 years of experience to her credit, Dr. Phyllis G. Supino has excelled at the State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate Medical Center as research professor of medicine and public health and as the director of clinical epidemiology and clinical research for the division of cardiovascular medicine from 2008 to 2011. Additionally, she was active within the SUNY system as a vice chair of Downstate's Institutional Review Board from 2012 to 2014, and was promoted to chair in 2015. Prior to these roles, she worked at Weill Cornell Medicine, formerly Weill Cornell Medical College, as director of data management and educational programs from 1990 to 1995, with faculty appointments in the departments of medicine and public health. Between 1996 and 1999, Dr. Supino worked at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai as a research associate professor of emergency medicine and medical education, as well as the director of research in emergency medicine. She returned to Weill Cornell Medicine in 1999 as director of data management and educational programs in the division of cardiovascular pathophysiology, and as research associate professor of medicine and public health, in which she currently holds an adjunct faculty appointment.

Dr. Supino began her career as an instructor of psychology and research associate in cognitive psychology at Princeton University from 1975 to 1977, with a secondary appointment as adjunct research psychologist in the Personality and Social Behavior Research Group at The Educational Testing Service, Princeton, New Jersey. From 1977 to 1979, she held the post of director of research and evaluation at the Educational Improvement Center NorthEast for the New Jersey State Department of Education. She further flourished at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, where she served as director of research and evaluation and adjunct instructor in the department of environmental and community medicine and the department of family medicine from 1979 to 1990.

Before embarking on her professional path, Dr. Supino pursued her education at the City College of the City University of New York, earning a Bachelor of Science in biological sciences in 1964. After completing a year of doctoral studies at the graduate faculties of Columbia University, between 1965 and 1967, Dr. Supino volunteered to serve as a public health technologist with the U.S. Peace Corps in Rabat, Morocco. After the Peace Corps, she concluded her studies at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, graduating with a doctoral degree in science education, and earning the Phi Delta Kappa Award for Excellence in Dissertation Research in 1976.

Dr. Supino has participated in numerous endeavors that highlight her wealth of knowledge in the field. Recruited to the scientific advisory board for the 15th through 17th World Congress on Heart Disease, she additionally held the positions of director and lecturer for the principles of research methodology course, which she designed and later adapted into the textbook, "Principles of Research Methodology: A Guide for Clinical Investigators," published in 2012. A reviewer for the journals Medical Education and Academic Emergency Medicine, she also contributed to the editorial board for the journal Cardiology. Dr. Supino found success with her written works as well, authoring scientific articles for Advances in Cardiology, Circulation, Academic Emergency Medicine, the American Journal of Cardiology, and the Journal of Nuclear Cardiology, among others.

In addition to her primary vocation, Dr. Supino remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to her areas of expertise. A lifetime member of the Kappa Delta Pi, an International Honor Society in Education, she has maintained her involvement with the New York Academy of Medicine as a fellow and as a member of the scientific advisory board for the International Academy of Cardiology. Moreover, Dr. Supino has served as a member of the Heart Valve Society of America, the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology, the American Federation for Medical Research, the American Heart Association and the American Statistical Association.

In light of her exceptional undertakings, Dr. Supino has accrued several accolades throughout her impressive career. Noted for her development of the first comprehensive courses on clinical research methodology for physicians at many academic institutions, she has been presented with the Best Mentor of the Year Award from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in 1998 and the Howard Gilman Foundation Award for Outstanding Contributions to Research and Teaching in Cardiovascular Diseases from the Howard Gilman Foundation in 1995. Additionally recognized with the Best National Science Abstract Award, she has also accepted a Pilot Research Award and grant from Weill Cornell Medicine and the Dean's Initiative Award and grant for her research on factors associated with patients' adherence to hospital discharge instructions after heart surgery. Dr. Supino was selected for inclusion in the eighth edition of Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare and multiple volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women.
