Dr. Davesene Lawson received the North Carolina Board of Governors' Award for Teaching Excellence in 1996.

Dr. Lawson is renowned as a retired business professor with more than 35 years of excellence in higher education and business development. Her interest in business spawned while enrolled in high school, having discovered an interest in secretarial following an internship at an office practice. She initially pursued an education at North Carolina Central University, earning a Bachelor of Science in commerce in 1960 and a Master of Science in 1972. Dr. Lawson later received her Doctor of Education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1980.
Between 1960 and 1963, Dr. Lawson began her career as an accounting clerk at North Carolina Central University, where she later worked as the secretary to the school's vice chancellor for financial affairs from 1963 to 1971 and an administrative assistant in the development and public relations office from 1971 to 1973. She further flourished as a business instructor at Durham Technical Community College during the 1973 to 1974 academic year, before returning to teach at North Carolina Central University in their School of Business. Dr. Lawson excelled in a number of positions at the aforementioned university between 1974 and her retirement in 1996, including as an instructor, an associate professor and the chair of the department of business education and administrative services.
As an administrator, Dr. Lawson supervised more than 22 graduate students through the development of their maser's theses, and additionally contributed as the director of student teaching placements. Active in her community, she is proud to have worked with the Triangle Hospice, where she held the post of the past president and was a member of the Board of Directors. She is the recipient of numerous awards and honors for her work in the community and in higher education, including the North Carolina Board of Governors' Award for Teaching Excellence in 1996. Moreover, Dr. Lawson has maintained her involvement as a member of the North Carolina Business Education Association, the National Business Education Association, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and Delta Pi Epsilon Honorary Fraternity.
