Dr. Martin is a prominent board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon and educator whose career began in his native country of Ireland in 2003 as a house officer at the Beaumont Hospital in Dublin. Since 2016 he has excelled as a clinical assistant professor of surgery at Ohio University in Athens and has been aligned with Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth, where he specializes in minimally invasive thoracic surgery, thoracic surgical oncology and cardiovascular surgery. He directs the lung health leadership team with a goal of reducing the mortality from lung cancer in Southern Ohio. Dr. Martin has also been a member of the residency advisory committee at the Hospital of Saint Raphael in New Haven, Connecticut, since 2007. He formerly worked as an assistant professor of thoracic surgery at the University of Kentucky for four years.

Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Martin's primary focus has been taking care of patients with lung cancer due to various environmental and geographic factors. A seasoned researcher, he has extensively studied minimally invasive esophagectomy, occult shock in the elderly trauma patient, laparoscopic hernia repair in the cirrhotic patient and the effects of delayed appendectomies. Dr. Martin has also taken interest in such areas as esophageal surgery, thoracic oncology, minimally invasive thoracic surgery, robot-assisted surgery and lung transplantation, among others.

A prominent community leader, Dr. Martin has utilized his skills as a musician, contributing as the organist at Christ Church in New Haven from 2005 to 2012. Furthermore, he has maintained his involvement with the American Guild of Organists in Lexington, Kentucky, as a substitute organist and member since 2011 and continues to serve as a substitute organist in various performances throughout Portsmouth. Growing up surrounded by music, Dr. Martin was the first organist in his family and has greatly enjoyed playing traditional Irish music. In later years, he performed at the National Concert Hall in Dublin in November 2003 as part of the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto.

Dr. Martin holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin since 2003. He completed an internship at Beaumont Hospital soon after, followed by a general surgery residency at the Hospital of Saint Raphael, a cardiothoracic fellowship at the University of Kentucky and a lung transplant and thoracic oncology fellowship at Duke University. In addition to these accomplishments, Dr. Martin is a licensed surgeon in the states of Kentucky and North Carolina.

Dr. Martin has been an active member of various organizations within his field, including the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association and the General Thoracic Surgical Club. Additionally, he is a member of the American College of Surgeons, for which he was the recipient of the Associate Trauma Research Prize for the 2005 to 2006 term. Likewise, Dr. Martin is an elected fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and an associate member of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Network. Among his other honors, he was an organ performance fellow at Trinity College of London in 2002 and was presented with a President's Award from the Hospital of Saint Raphael in 2006. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Martin has also been featured in several editions of Who's Who in America.
