Having earned distinction for more than 35 years as a business executive, Mr. Rhetts and his wife established their publishing firm, LPD Press & Rio Grande Books, in 1984. They later founded Rio Grande Books in 2006 to incorporate books on a more regional level. As a result, their company successfully shares many stories of the Hispanic southwest through the mediums of history, culture and art. Additionally, Mr. Rhetts published Tradición Revista magazine, the only U.S. magazine to cover Native American and Hispanic art and culture in the southwest. It was in print from 1995 to 2013.
Mr. Rhetts' distinguished career in publishing began in 1969 as a public affairs producer on behalf of two different local television stations in Washington, D.C., and Maryland. He later worked as a publications' consultant for the Community College of Baltimore before becoming a public information officer for Howard County Schools in Ellicott City, Maryland, between 1976 and 1986. Mr. Rhetts also briefly taught as an adjunct faculty member at Loyola College in Baltimore from 1978 to 1980.
Together, Mr. Rhetts and his wife have published over 300 books and authored close to 20 books, including "Nicholas Herrera: Visiones de Mi Corazon" in 2003, "Faces of Market: Traditional Spanish and Contemporary Hispanic Market" in 2010 and "Voices of New Mexico, Too," the second in its series, in 2013. They have also collectively accumulated and re-issued "Portfolio of Spanish Colonia Design in New Mexico," which is a reprint of the original 1938 book. In 2011, Mr. Rhetts' publishing company was selected to produce the official book from the 40th balloon fiesta. Ten years later, the company was again asked to publish the book, which was a huge honor. "Fifty Years of Magic: Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta" will be released in 2021.
Mr. Rhetts' interest and involvement in his community inspired him to serve on the executive board of the Humanities Institute in Columbia. He excelled in the same capacity for the Family Life Center in Columbia and for Columbia Archives, and he is a member and former board director of his local chamber of commerce. In 2004, Mr. Rhetts notably created the New Mexico Book Co-op and found success as its chief executive officer. New Mexico's largest nonprofit volunteer book organization, the Co-op's mission is to highlight local books, authors and professionals in the industry, encourage literacy and raise awareness of quality books published within the state.
Prior to embarking upon his professional journey, Mr. Rhetts pursued a formal education at Bucknell University. He received a Bachelor of Arts in 1968. Mr. Rhetts later undertook coursework for a Masters degree in public administration at the University of Southern California.
Aligned with several prominent industry-related organizations, Mr. Rhetts is a member and past president of the Chesapeake chapter of the National School of Public Relations Association and the Public Relations Society of America. Other memberships include the American Professional Graphic Artists Association, the New Mexico Book Association, the Columbia Business Exchange, the Educational Press Association and the Desktop Publishing Association. In addition to their work in publishing, Mr. Rhetts and his wife curated an exhibit on New Mexican santos artwork. Their art collection has frequently been loaned to museums and art centers throughout the U.S.
Recognized with multiple awards for his work, Mr. Rhetts first received a San Francisco International Film Festival Award in 1971. He since received a Broadcasting Award from The Ohio State University in 1972, a Community Service Merit Award from the Southern Educational Communications Association in 1973, a National Community Service Award from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting in 1973 and, among other recognitions, several Blue Ribbon Awards and Gold Medallion Awards from the National School of Public Relations Association. A celebrated Marquis listee, Mr. Rhetts has been showcased in close to 20 editions of Who's Who, including Who's in Finance and Business, Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the Media and Communication.
