Michael S. Simberkoff, M.D. received his A.B. from Dartmouth College (1958) and his M.D. from the NYU School of Medicine (1962). He trained in Internal Medicine on the III&IV (NYU) Medical Divisions of Bellevue Hospital and was a Basic Science Trainee and infectious diseases (ID) Fellow in the Laboratory of Lewis Thomas, M.D. at NYU School of Medicine. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and ID. He served as Lieutenant, Medical Corps, U.S. Navy at the Naval Medical Research Institute, National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland from 1964 to 1966. Dr. Simberkoff was appointed to the faculty of the NYU School of Medicine in 1967 and rose to the rank of Professor of Medicine.

Dr. Simberkoff was a fulltime member of the staff of the New York (NY) Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) from 1970-2016. During his career at the VA, he served in many capacities including Research Associate and Clinical Investigator in the Research Service, member of and later Chief of the ID Section in the Medical Service, Chair of the Infection Control Committee, and as Associate Chief of Staff for Research &Development. In the early 1980s, he founded the ID Clinic at the NY VAMC and pioneered outpatient treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and its complications. Dr. Simberkoff also worked with colleagues at other VA Medical Centers to develop and implement an HIV Registry that is used throughout Veterans Health Administration (VHA) facilities. In 1997 he was appointed to the position of Chief of Staff (COS) of the NY VAMC. Following the merger of the NY and Brooklyn VAMCs to form VA New York Harbor Health System (NYHHS) in 1999, Dr. Simberkoff was appointed to the position of Executive COS. He served in that position until he retired in 2016. Since retiring, Dr. Simberkoff has served as a volunteer at the VA, seeing patients and supervising as well as teaching medical students, residents, and fellows.

Dr. Simberkoff served on several national committees including the NIH DAIDS Therapeutics Research Workgroup, the VHA Advisory Committee on HIV, the VHA Infectious Diseases Field Advisory Group, and the Veterans Benefit Administration Advisory Committee on Disability Benefits. In 2013, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the VA Society for Practitioners of Infectious Diseases. He is a Past President of the Infectious Disease Society of New York (IDSNY), the National Association of VA Physician Executives (NAVAPE), and the Board of Governors of the NYU School of Medicine Alumni Association. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and the Infectious Diseases Society of America.

Dr. Simberkoff's research interests include pathogenesis and treatment of bacterial infections, treatment of HIV infection and its complications, vaccines, and the prevention and treatment of infections. Dr. Simberkoff was a Participating Investigator (PI) in VA Cooperative Study Program (CSP) #89 evaluating treatment of S. aureus bacteremia, Chairman of a CSP #189, evaluating pneumococcal vaccine efficacy in high-risk patients, Co-Chair of the CSP #298, comparing early versus later zidovudine for treatment of HIV infection, and a PI and member of the Executive Committee of CSP #403, the Shingles Prevention Study. He was a site investigator in the Veterans Aging Cohort Study, and the Respiratory Protection Effectiveness Clinical Trial (ResPECT) Study. He has authored or co-authored more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and several book chapters.
