Supported by an impressive educational background, Dr. Hiemstra led a prolific career as an executive minister for nearly five decades. Upon becoming ordained as a minister, he began his career as such with the First Reformed Church of Waterloo, Iowa, in 1955. In 1959, he joined the Good Shepard Church in Westland, Michigan, as a minister for five years, before accepting the role of an executive minister for the Reformed Church of America in New Yok City, between 1964 and 1972. Moreover, Dr. Hiemstra found success as the communication director of United Ministries in New York City for seven years, while serving as an executive secretary for the Synod of New York in Tarrytown during 1979.
Dr. Hiemstra later concluded his career as the president of the reformed church of America in 1991. The highlight of his career was assisting in the organization of the churches he worked with. During his first year as a pastor, Dr. Hiemstra attended a stewardship conference and met numerous leaders from his denomination, which became a truly formative experience.
In addition to his primary endeavors, Dr. Hiemstra served as a moderator for the General Synod at the Reformed Church of America, between 1991 and 1992, and as the president of the New York State Council of Churches, from 1987 and 1989. Currently, he remains active with the Council of Churches of the City of New York. The past president and member of the Hudson Area Housing Agency in Tarrytown, he also undertook special ministries for Japanese congregants. For his contributions, Dr. Hiemstra has been named "Man of the Year" by the Jaycees Westland in 1963 and Clergy of the Year by Our Lady of the Skies at JFK Airport. Likewise, he has been featured in 24th edition of Who's Who in the East.
A graduate of Central University, Dr. Hiemstra earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1952. Shortly thereafter, he secured a Master of Divinity from the New Brunswick Theological Seminary in 1955. As he continued his academic efforts, Dr. Hiemstra received a Doctor of Education from Rutgers University in 1978, before concluding his studies with a Doctor of Divinity from Central University in 1989.
