Affiliated with Rhode Island College since 1986, Dr. Olson is a professor of history who teaches various courses, including western history, Christianity in global perspective, Tudor-Stuart England, and the age of the Renaissance and of the Reformation. During her tenure in Rhode Island, she has also worked as a visiting professor at Boston University, Luther Seminary in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and Saint Andrews University in Scotland. Additionally, Dr. Olson was a member of the doctoral faculty at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California, an assistant professor at San Francisco Theological Seminary and a teaching assistant at the University of Minnesota.
Over the course of her career, Dr. Olson was active as a member of the International Congress for Luther Research, an international gathering of scholars who exchange and stimulate study on Martin Luther and the Reformation, in Germany, Norway, the Netherlands, Brazil, Wittenberg, and the United States. She has further flourished as a member of the International Congress for Calvin Research, a conference for worldwide scholarly discussion of the latest advances in theological and historical research on Calvin, the beginnings of the Reformed church, and its theological traditions in the 16th century. Furthermore, Dr. Olson has served on the task force and the committee on theological education for the Confessional Nature of the Church and the Presbyterian Church.
A prolific author and book reviewer, Dr. Olson has contributed chapters to dozens of books and entries in several encyclopedias, as well as articles in numerous professional journals. Her first book was a history of the church in French, "Histoire de l'Eglise, vingt siecle et six continents" in 1972.
Historians know her for her book entitled "Calvin and Social Welfare: Deacons and the Bourse Française" in 1989. She is also the author of "Deacons and Deaconesses through the Centuries" in 1992 and 2005, which obtained an Award of Commendation from the Concordia Historical Institute. Previously, Dr. Olson earned a bachelor's degree, summa cum laude, at Saint Olaf College in 1961, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in her junior year, followed by a master's degree in 1962 and a Doctor of Philosophy in history and religious studies at Stanford University in 1980.
Aligned with several professional memberships relative to her career, Dr. Olson has notably participated on the institutional liaison committee of the American Society of Church History, the governing council of the 16th Century Studies Society and the executive committee of the Calvin Studies Society. Other memberships to her credit include the Renaissance Society of America, the Society of Reformation Research and, among others, the Huguenot Society of Great Britain and Ireland. She has notably accepted several grants from organizations such as the American Council of Learned Societies, the American Academy of Religion, the Woodrow Wilson Foundation, the Danforth Foundation, and the Rhode Island College committees on Faculty Scholarship and Development since 1982.
