Having accrued more than 40 years of experience in the field of electrical engineering, Dr. Ilic has garnered a laudable reputation as a senior research scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. As a child, she took an early interest in literature, but was directed toward engineering by her father. She attended the University of Belgrade, earning a diploma in engineering in 1974, and a Master of Electrical Engineering in 1976. In 1979, Dr. Ilic completed a Master of Science in Systems Science at Washington University, and was awarded with a Doctor of Science in Systems Science and Mathematics in 1980.
Dr. Ilic served as an assistant professor of electrical engineering at Drexel University from 1981 until 1982, Cornell University between 1982 and 1984, and the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana from 1984 to 1986. She rose to become an associate professor at the University of Illinois in 1986, and continued her career as a visiting associate at MIT from 1987 until 1989. Between 1989 and 2002, Dr. Ilic found success as a senior research scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
In 2000, Dr. Ilic was appointed as the director of the ECS programs division of the National Science Foundation, where she would serve through 2001. From 2002 to 2016, she was active as a tenured full professor at Carnegie Mellon University, and earned the distinguished title of a professor emerita in 2016. Dr. Ilic remains a member of the senior staff at the MIT-Lincoln Laboratory. She is likewise the editor in chief of NOW Publishers Netherlands, and has co-written numerous books about mathematical modeling and control for electric power systems. To remain aware of developments in her field, Dr. Ilic is a lifetime fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
