During his tenure, he served as an Acoustician in the Force Projection Sector and a supervisor for the Acoustics and Electromagnetics Group, and was a chief scientist for several major U.S. Navy experiments in low-frequency active acoustics and passive acoustics. Since retiring from the non-profit, university-affiliated research center, Dr. Newhall has been teaching an ongoing course in sonar signal processing with a colleague through the Applied Technology Institute in Maryland.
As a seasoned researcher, Dr. Newhall has contributed numerous articles to various publications in his field as an author and co-author. Some of his areas of study have included propagation in random media, underwater acoustic scattering and reverberation, the dynamics and acoustic performance of long towed hydrophone arrays and underwater acoustic communication. Dr. Newhall began his studies at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in 1974 and a Doctor of Philosophy in mathematics in 1980.
In support of his career, Dr. Newhall has been a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), where he notably served as the associate editor for the Institute's Journal of Oceanic Engineering from 2012 to 2017. He was also the recipient of a Donald W. Tufts Award in underwater acoustic signal processing from the IEEE in 2017. An elected fellow of the Acoustical Society of America, he further received a Bronze Medal from the National Defense Industrial Association. A celebrated Marquis listee, he has been included in the 66th edition of Who's Who in America.
