A medicinal chemist, researcher and pharmaceutical executive who is renowned for his extensive expertise in peptide and peptidomimetic chemistry, Dr. Veber spent nearly three decades of his career with Merck & Co. Inc. in West Point, Pennsylvania. During that period, he served in a number of roles, ultimately achieving the title of senior director of medicinal chemistry. Recruited by SmithKline Beecham Pharmaceuticals, now known as GlaxoSmithKline, in 1993, Dr. Veber excelled as the director of medicinal chemistry at the organization's King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, location. He remained in his position until 2002 and has since become an independent consultant to the pharmaceutical industry in Ambler, Pennsylvania.
Dr. Veber's work with peptide hormones has been utilized with several drugs and drug processes. He is recognized for his extensive work on the synthesis of enzymes, which is considered a historic breakthrough because it has been extremely useful in the development of drugs for AIDS and HIV patients. Notably holding several U.S. patents in his field, Dr. Veber has disseminated many of his research findings throughout 275 peer-reviewed journals as either an author or a co-author. He has also contributed to the editorial boards for several specialist journals, including the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, the Journal of Peptide Science and Molecular Pharmaceuticals. Furthermore, Dr. Veber has provided his wealth of knowledge at various institutions by hosting seminars, including on the topic of medicinal chemistry at the University of Wisconsin.
An instrumental figure in chemistry and pharmaceuticals, Dr. Veber has held positions on various boards, including the board of directors for Tranzyme Pharma, a private pharmaceutical company that focused its efforts on drug discovery and development for the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases. Aligned with the National Institutes of Health for much of the 1980s, he has also remained affiliated with numerous industry-related organizations, including the American Society of Biological Chemists and the American Chemical Society. Moreover, he is a member and former council member of the American Peptide Society, an honorary member of the New York Academy of Sciences and an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Likewise, Dr. Veber was inducted into Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Honor Society.
An alumnus of the prestigious Yale University, Dr. Veber obtained a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Science in chemistry in 1961 and 1962, respectively. While in college, he received a summer fellowship to conduct research in chemistry, which further piqued his interest in pursuing a career in the field. Dr. Veber eventually completed his studies at Yale in 1964, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in organic chemistry.
Dr. Veber's many honors include recognition from the American Chemical Society with a Philadelphia Section Award in 1988 and a Ralph F. Hirschmann Award in Peptide Chemistry in 2001. He was also presented with the Alan E. Pierce Award, now designated as the R. Bruce Merrifield Award, in 1991 by the American Peptide Society. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Veber was additionally featured in numerous editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the East.
