Mr. Hutson is renowned as a retired school band director with more than 25 years of excellence in his field. His interest in music education began as a teenager, and he eventually set his sights upon becoming a band director himself. Mr. Hutson later pursued an education at West Texas State University, earning a Bachelor of Music Education in 1971 and a Master of Arts in 1972.
From 1972 to 1975, Mr. Hutson began his career as the director of bands for Levelland Junior High School, now known as Levelland Middle School, before working at Levelland High School from 1975 to 1983. Accepting the positions of the head of the fine arts department and the band camp administrator for South Plains College during the 1982 to 1983 academic year, he subsequently excelled as the band director and the fine arts department chair for River Road Independent School District in Amarillo, Texas, from 1983 until his retirement from education in 2001. Notably, Mr. Hutson was honored with the University of Texas Excellence Award for High School Teacher of the Year on three occasions during this time.
Since 2001, Mr. Hutson has flourished as an independent insurance advisor and the owner of the Jim Hutson Agency LLC. As an insurance advisor, he has been presented with a 2018 Better Business Bureau Torch Award for Ethics. Since 2001, Mr. Hutson has served as a conductor for the Texas Panhandle Tuba Christmas Project, which he considers a rewarding bridge between his past and current careers.
A member of the Texas Bandmasters Association, Mr. Hutson was active as a member, the past president and the band division chair for region one of the Texas Music Educators Association. Moreover, he thrived as the president of the Greater Southwest Music Festival from 2016 to 2017 and the president of the Amarillo area chapter of NAIFA from 2015 to 2017. Designated as the manager of the Tri-City Sales Forum until 2020, Mr. Hutson hopes to continue helping others plan for their financial goals and futures in the years to come.
