Backed by a passion for architecture that stemmed from his childhood, Mr. Beer has flourished in the field for 45 years. After initially serving as a designer for Pederson and Tilney between 1960 and 1962, he gained valuable expertise as an associate designer for Hoberman and Wasserman and as a design director for Welton Becket Associates during the remainder of the 1960s and the 1970s.
In 1985, Mr. Beer founded BBG Architects and BBGM Architects and Interiors with his partners Hank Brennan, Peter Gorman, and Julia Monk, eventually employing almost 300 people on three continents. He designed several urban centers including Worcester Center and Campus City Center. His office buildings include The Mellon Bank World Headquarters in Pittsburg, Barclay's Bank American Headquarters on Wall Street, and Chevy Chase Bank Headquarters. Later in his career, he was best known for his hospitality designs which included the gut renovation of the St. Regis in New York and both Peninsula Hotels in Bangkok and Shanghai. The latter hotel was designed so that it fit in seamlessly with the great landmark buildings on the Bund. He also designed hotels for many companies from Sheraton and Hilton to The Four Seasons and The Mandarin Oriental.
Over the years, Mr. Beer also parlayed his extensive knowledge as a speaker for architectural seminars on hotel design at prestigious educational institutions, including Harvard University, Columbia University, Cornell University and New York University. Mr. Beer further contributed to his community through the New York State Preservation League, the Friends of the Upper East Side, Save Venice, Inc., Manhattan Country School, Civitas, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Metropolitan Opera, and American Friends of the Shanghai Museum.
Prior to embarking upon his professional path, Mr. Beer initially earned a Bachelor of Arts from Harvard College in 1956. Subsequently, he graduated with a Master of Architecture from Harvard Graduate School of Design in 1959. Likewise, Mr. Beer has been registered as an architect in New York, New Jersey, Georgia, Florida, Connecticut, Virginia and Washington, D.C.
With a plethora of knowledge at his disposal, Mr. Beer authored a book about hotel architecture titled "A Grand Affair" in 2017. Mr. Beer has retained his professional alignment with the American Institute of Architects and the Century Association.
In recognition of his outstanding efforts, Mr. Beer as a member of the firm Peterson, Tilney, Hoberman, Wasserman and Beer, was presented with the First Prize at the FDR Memorial Competition in 1962 and multiple Office Building of the Year Awards from the Buildings Owners and Managers Association between 1986 and 1995. He additionally accepted the Platinum Circle Award in 1996 as well as the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award.
