Steward Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine is comprised of a talented group of prominent surgeons with a wealth of experience. Focusing his practice on various procedures such as complex and revision hip and knee replacement, Makoplasty total knee replacements, cementless total knee replacements, dual pivot total knee replacements and Unicompartmental replacements, Dr. Sands also concentrates on the early intervention of hip and knee disorders. In addition to maintaining his practice, he has affiliated with Steward Health Care in Melbourne as the director of orthopaedic surgery.
Prior to establishing his practice, Dr. Sands held appointments with First Choice Medical Group and Health First in Florida. While active at First Choice, he specialized in minimally invasive total hip replacement, total hip resurfacing and computer-assisted total joint replacement and performed groundbreaking knee replacements. Dr. Sands also worked at Viera Sports Medicine and Orthopaedics in Melbourne, where he was instrumental in the development of the new total joint program at Viera Hospital.
Dr. Sands contributed for several years practicing in Rome, Georgia. Affiliated with the Total Joint Center at Floyd Medical Center as a medical director, he also worked at the Harbin Clinic in Rome where he was responsible for developing a nationally recognized total joint center. While serving in the military, Dr. Sands directed the adult joint reconstruction program at the William Beaumont Army Medical Center, a Department of Defense medical facility located in El Paso, Texas, and educated residents at Texas Tech University Health Science Center School of Medicine in El Paso.
Throughout his career, Dr. Sands has served in multiple hospital leadership roles and developed Total Joint Centers of Excellence. He was also proud to have been selected as one of the first 50 surgeons in the U.S. to perform the first Birmingham hip resurfacing procedure at Floyd Medical Center in 2006. A groundbreaking procedure at that time, it led to him traveling throughout the country as a lecturer on the subject. Moreover, Dr. Sands has been afforded the opportunity to work on a number of pro bono cases, which is personally rewarding. In the future, he hopes to establish a nonprofit organization that will serve the underserved by offering such free surgeries. An alumnus of Duke University, Dr. Sands received a Bachelor of Science in zoology in 1992.
Accepted into medical school at Tulane University, he originally planned to pursue pediatrics, but pivoted towards orthopaedic surgery and graduated with a Doctor of Medicine in 1996. Additional educational pursuits to his credit include a general surgery internship at Tulane University Medical School, an orthopaedic residency at the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center and a fellowship in adult joint reconstruction at the Florida Orthopaedic Institute in Tampa. Dr. Sands later completed additional training in direct anterior total hip surgery, computer assisted total joint replacement, dual pivot total knee replacement and Mako total knee replacement. Eminently qualified in his field, he is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and was notably the first surgeon in the state of Florida to be trained and certified to perform anterior cruciate ligament-sparing XR total knee replacements.
To remain aware of developments in surgical techniques, Dr. Sands has maintained his participation in continuing education courses. He is also actively engaged as a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Florida Orthopaedic Society, the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons and the International Hip Arthroscopy Society. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. An expert in hip and knee replacements, hip resurfacing, direct anterior hip replacements, computer-assisted surgery and, among other areas, partial knee replacements, Dr. Sands credits his success to the sheer passion he holds for his work.
