Having led a diversified career for more than 30 years, Dr. Thoman initially taught business and marketing courses at Green River High School in Green River for five years, and at Western Wyoming Community College until 2010. She has also excelled as a cattle and sheep rancher in southwest Wyoming since 1981. Additionally, Dr. Thoman has been involved with Mary Kay Cosmetics for more than three decades, beginning in 1989 as a senior sales director and as a team manager since 2018.
Participating in numerous civic and educational initiatives throughout her career, Dr. Thoman has played an instrumental role in several of the federal programs that have been implemented in the state of Wyoming. She is active on the Executive Committee of the Wyoming Landscape Conservation Initiative, is chairman of the Sweetwater County Conservation District and, among other roles, she has been a member of the Wyoming Task Force on Federal Land Policy. Dr. Thoman has also lent her expertise as a business instructor for Western Wyoming College, as a southwest Wyoming collaborative team education consultant for Kemmerer School District and as chairman of the Wyoming State Council on Vocational Education.
Dr. Thoman received an Associate of Arts at Western Wyoming Community College in 1970, followed by a Bachelor of Science in business at the University of Wyoming in 1972. She then attended Colorado State University where she completed both a Master of Arts in education and marketing in 1978, as well as a Doctor of Philosophy in vocational and secondary administration in 1981. Dr. Thoman has accrued a professional teaching certificate. While attending graduate school she also earned a private pilot-instrument rating and owned a Cessna 182 for 30+ years.
Aligned with several professional organizations, Dr. Thoman is a member of the Wyoming Woolgrowers, the Wyoming Stockgrowers and the Wyoming and Sweetwater County Farm Bureau. She is also a member of the Rock Springs Chamber of Commerce and a former education committee member and board director of the Kemmerer Chamber of Commerce. She was recognized as Sweetwater County's First Annual YWCA Woman of Distinction Awardee in 2012. Dr. Thoman was also named as an Outstanding Member of the Region VIII Regulatory Fairness Board for 2002. A celebrated Marquis listee, she has been featured in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the West and Who's Who of American Women, Who's Who of Women in the World, as well as numerous editions of several high school and junior college Who's Who publications.
