Now an emeritus research scientist, Dr. York contributed for 30 years in his role at the State University of New York's (SUNY) Research Institute on Addictions in Buffalo before retiring in 2005. During his tenure on campus, he also served as a research associate professor of psychology on campus from 1981 to 1998. He has notably taught courses on drug and substance abuse, alcohol research and treatment, addictive behaviors, psychodynamics of tobacco dependence and alcohol research and treatment. Additionally, Dr. York worked for two years as a postdoctoral trainee at SUNY between 1972 and 1974, just after completing his doctoral work.
A prominent figure in his field, Dr. York has participated in various invited presentations, seminars and workshops and has been featured in several media interviews in his area of expertise. Widely published, he has authored and co-authored over 50 peer-reviewed scientific articles in such scholarly journals as Psychopharmacology and the Journal of Studies on Alcohol. He has also published 29 abstracts. What's more, Dr. York served on the editorial board of the Journal of Studies on Alcohol between 1998 and 2004, was a referee for several scientific journals, has contributed chapters to several books, as well as a chapter in the 1977 edition of "Encyclopedia of Chemistry."
Dr. York received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at Bradley University in 1965 and a PhD in Pharmacology at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1972. While in college, Dr. York had the opportunity to work at the Illinois State Psychiatric Institute in the neurophysiology laboratory of Dr. Luis Marco. Dr. York also garnered a laudable reputation within the department of neurology at Rush-Presbyterian/Saint Luke's Hospital in Chicago as a laboratory technician in neurophysiology.
Recognized for his contributions to the field, Dr. York was featured in a 1995 article titled 'Research in Brief' in the Research Institute on Addictions' publication. He has received several grants from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Substance Abuse Research and the New York State Health Research Council, several Travel Awards and a Recognition Award for Outstanding Career Accomplishments in Alcohol and Substance Abuse Research from the Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services in 1994. Among other industry-related organizations, Dr. York is a member of the Research Society on Alcoholism, the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics and the International Society for Biomedical Research on Alcoholism.
