NEW YORK, NY, May 08, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Kit Smyth Basquin, PhD, has been included in Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Dr. Basquin is a writer, curator, museum educator, and art historian specializing in postwar prints. A graduate of The Spence School, she initially studied art history with noted art historian Margaret Scolari Barr. Dr. Basquin continued her academic studies at Goucher College, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1963, before completing a Master of Arts in art history at Indiana University in 1970. Dr. Basquin earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Union Institute and University, Cincinnati, in 2009. She wrote her dissertation on the prints of Pat Steir, Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, Lynne Allen, and Lesley Dill. Her exhibition of their work was shown at City University of New York on Staten Island and at Boston University.
In 1971, Dr. Basquin began her career as assistant director of public relations at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, writing press releases about their collection. In 1972 she opened Washington Gallery in Frankfort, Indiana, moving it to Indianapolis in 1977 for two years. In 1979 she and her family moved to Milwaukee. Dr. Basquin opened Kit Basquin Gallery there in 1981, closing it in 1983. After courses in writing at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, Dr. Basquin joined the staff at the Haggerty Museum of Art, Marquette University, becoming curator of education and independent curator 1988—1995, coordinating a team of eighty volunteers, writing catalogues and brochures, and co-curating Images of Death in Contemporary Art in 1990, among other exhibitions.
Dr. Basquin served as director of outreach for the Wisconsin Humanities Council 1995—1998. In 1998 she also curated a Marvin Lowe retrospective at Indiana University. The following year she returned to New York and worked as a marketing consultant and exhibition manager at William Doyle Galleries, and auction house. 2000–2014 Dr. Basquin was an administrative associate in the Department of Drawings and Prints, at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. She retired to complete a biography of pioneer animator and experimental filmmaker, Mary Ellen Bute. Publication of Mary Ellen Bute: Pioneer Animator is expected in 2020. Dr. Basquin is now writing a memoir.
Dr. Basquin taught art history at The Fine Arts School, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in 1968. In the 1990s, she was an instructor of art history at Concordia University, Milwaukee, at night. In 1996 she taught art history in Gaza for Marquette University.
Dr. Basquin also was a past president of the Milwaukee Art Museum Contemporary Art society, a trustee of Ten Chimney's Foundation in Wisconsin, and a member of the University Club in Milwaukee. In New York she is a member of The University Club, two church choirs, and MasterVoices, a volunteer chorus.
