Dr. Jack Hassard Celebrated for Dedication to the Field of Science Education



In a career filled with highlights, Dr. Jack Hassard was involved in numerous research projects, teaching graduate science education courses, and many service activities.

    MARIETTA, GA, May 12, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Jack Hassard has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Backed by many years of practical and research experiences in education, Dr. Hassard is designated as a professor emeritus of science education with Georgia State University, for which he had served as professor of science education since 1969. Previously he gained valuable expertise in the field as visiting professor, writer and researcher for Florida State University, and visiting professor at the University of Vermont. Dr. Hassard also was visiting scholar for the Far West Lab for Educational Research during the mid-1980's and visiting professor at the University of Hawaii during the summers, 1994 -1998. He began his science education career as a high school science teacher in Lexington, MA in 1962.

In a career filled with highlights, Dr. Hassard was involved in numerous research projects, teaching graduate science education courses, and many service activities. He was the lead developer of the TEEMS Mathematics and Science Teacher Education Program at Georgia State University, the primary program preparing middle and high school mathematics and science teachers at GSU. Dr. Hassard was also major professor for dozens of Ph.D. students at Georgia State University for more than 30 years, many of whom are now leaders in higher education and public education.

Dr. Hassard began his work with the Soviet Union (later Russia) in 1981 which led to the creation of the Global Thinking Project (1989 -2002) that developed one of first global, Internet-based environmental science programs for middle and high school students. With funding from the Eisenhower Grant Program, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the United State Information Agency, the aforementioned program supported research and an exchange program involving hundreds of teachers and students between the United State and Russia. The Global Thinking Project ended up involving more than 100 schools participating from the United States, Russia, Australia, Spain, and the Czech Republic, among others. Institutes for teachers were held in the summers in Atlanta.

Dr. Hassard also designed science and technology workshops for the Bureau of Education and Research and for more than a decade presented seminars for science teachers around the U.S. in which more than 20,000 teachers were involved.

In order to remain aware of changes in the field he is affiliated with the American Association for the Advancement in Science, the National Science Teachers Association, the National Association for Research in Science Teaching, the Association for Humanistic Psychology, and the Union of Concerned Scientists.

An expert in the field, Dr. Hassard earned a Bachelor of Science in earth science teacher education from Bridgewater State University in 1962. Subsequently he studied physics at the Illinois Institute of Technology's summer institute for science teachers, and obtained a Master of Science in science education from Boston University in 1966. Dr. Hassard received a National Science Foundation Fellowship to attend the Ohio State University, and graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy in science education and geology in 1969.

With a plethora of knowledge at his disposal, Dr. Hassard has authored or co-authored for than 20 works, including Holt Science, Science Experiences, Minds on Science, The Art of Teaching Science, Science as Inquiry, Environmental Science on the Net, The Artistry of Teaching, Extreme Earth, and The Whole Cosmos Catalog of Science Activities and numerous articles and research papers. In light of his outstanding body of work, he was honored with the Tillinghast Award for Outstanding Contributions in Education from Bridgewater State University in 1998.

Looking toward the future, Dr. Hassard intends to continue writing on his blog, the Art of Teaching Science, an historical and ongoing conversation about science education and science and science-related social issues. He also will further his work as an artist, and work with his wife, Mary-Alice Hassard, in their business, Anne Charles Antiques.
