Dr. Bailey's extensive experience has notably included working for such well-known organizations as Cephalon Inc., and ViroPharma Inc. as a senior scientist, and Sterling-Winthrop Inc. as a senior research chemist, senior research investigator and principal research investigator in New York and Pennsylvania.
As a seasoned researcher, Dr. Bailey co-invented over 50 U.S. patents. He notably co-invented Tecovirimat, a novel smallpox drug that was selected by U.S. government for the national bio-defense initiative. The drug was recently approved by the Federal Drug Administration in 2019. He also was an inventor on the antipicornaviral series of inhibitors that resulted in the NDA candidate pleconaril. Additionally, he has been an integral part of teams that delivered 7 clinical candidates. As a result of his many years of research, Dr. Bailey has authored and co-authored approximately 40 articles in various scholarly journals in his area of expertise and has served as a reviewer for the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry.
Dr. Bailey completed a Bachelor of Science in chemistry at The Ohio State University in 1978, during which time he published five professional works in peer reviewed journals. He subsequently completed a Doctor of Philosophy in synthetic organic chemistry at Pennsylvania State University in 1982 before spending another two years as a postdoctoral fellow studying organic synthesis under Dr. A.I. Meyers at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado. Since concluding his academic efforts, Dr. Bailey has maintained his professional alignment with the American Chemical Society and the New York Academy of Science.
