L. Gary Knight retired in 2014 from his position as an elected member of the Maine House of Representatives.

Having provided well over 50 years of service to his community, Mr. Knight retired in 2014 from his position as an elected member of the Maine House of Representatives. Goal-oriented and a natural high achiever, he became involved in state-wide politics out of desire to help his fellow citizens. He served eight years with the Taxation Committee, chairing it for two years when his party was in power.
From 1962 until 1999 Mr. Knight found initial success as a community banker culminating in his position as President and CEO of Livermore Falls Trust. Following the merger of that institution with Androscoggin Bank he served eight years as the Executive VP and chair of the Trust & Investment Division. In 2006 he was elected to the Maine House of Representatives by the constituents of District 81. Mr. Knight also served several years as an adjunct professor of business at the University of Maine at Farmington.
Extremely active in banking circles he served as an executive officer and director of the Independent Bankers Association of America. He was a past president of Maine Bankers and the Independent Community Bankers of Maine and was a long-time trustee of the Williams College of Banking in Massachusetts. He served as a Director of Livermore Falls Trust from 1978 until 1999. He was also a Corporator of Franklin Savings Bank in Farmington, Maine.
Throughout his life he has also served the medical community in various capacities, he co-founded the regional ambulance service serving as an EMT for twenty years and chaired several medical organizations throughout Central Maine including a few years on the hospital board of trustees. Besides his distinguished service to the Williams School of Banking, he was also active locally serving over a dozen years on the area school board, several as the Chairperson. Education has always been an important interest to Mr. Knight and for years he has been the Lead Agent for his classmates at Colby College. He chairs an education scholarship program for area youth and established a major scholarship initiative at Colby.
Accolades include being named the Volunteer Banker of Maine and receipt of a Colby brick. He achieved Eagle rank as a young man.
Mr. Knight earned his BA in economics from Colby College in 1966 followed by an MBA from the University of Southern Maine. He also graduated from the Williams College School of Banking and completed an executive two year program at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He is a graduate of Leadership Maine, class of 2001.
Mr. Knight has also been very involved in youth sports as a coach and as an official. He is a former president of the State of Maine Baseball Umpires Association and the Umpire-in-Chief of West Central Maine Softball board. He served as president of the Spruce Mountain Ski Association and was a long-time patrolman of the slopes. In his retirement he continues his avocation of sports by skiing, playing tennis, officiating ball games and more relaxing interests of reading and chess. He is a dedicated fan of New England sports, especially the Red Sox.
