Drawing a wealth of inspiration from his mother, a teacher in her own right, he resolved at an early age to follow her example. Dr. Campbell initially began his career as an instructor at Virginia Polytechnic Institute from 1963 until 1964, after which he briefly served in a similar role at Madison College in 1966.
Prior to embarking upon his professional journey, Dr. Campbell pursued a formal education at the University of Virginia. Studying throughout much of the 1960s, he attained a Bachelor of Science, a Master of Arts in history, and a Doctor of Philosophy in history. Since he began to work in the field of academia, Dr. Campbell has specialized in Texas history and the institution of slavery, for which he has written several books of particular note, including "A Southern Community in Crisis: Harrison County, Texas, 1850-1880," "An Empire for Slavery: The Peculiar Institution in Texas, 1821-1865," "Sam Houston and the American Southwest," "Grass-Roots Reconstruction in Texas, 1865-1880" and three editions of "Gone to Texas: A History of the Lone Star State."
In light of his professional accomplishments, Dr. Campbell has received recognition from several prestigious organizations. To wit, he was presented with the Ramsdell Award from the Southern Historical Association, the Summerfield Roberts Award, the Friends of Dallas Public Library Award from the Texas Institute of Letters, the Tullis Award from TSHA and the Eminent Faculty Award from the University of North Texas. In order to remain aware of developments in his field, Dr. Campbell maintains his professional affiliation with the Texas State Historical Association and the Southern Historical Association.
