Roake Perry, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Perry celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. Having accrued more than 45 years of service to her students and discipline, Dr. Perry garnered a laudable reputation as an educator until her retirement in 2005. Unsure of what she wanted to pursue, she recalled her childhood love of art and her excitement for working with children, and consequently majored in education at Oregon State University, completing a Bachelor of Science in December 1960. She earned a Master of Arts in teaching at Reed College in 1966, and completed further postgraduate coursework at the University of Oregon before receiving her Doctor of Philosophy in 1983. Dr. Perry was licensed to teach elementary and secondary students along with a principal certification in the state of Oregon.
From 1961 until 1964, Dr. Perry taught at the Grout School. She taught first and second grade at the Creston School between 1964 and 1965. She began teaching art in the Portland area in 1965, working at the Ockley Green School, the Fernwood School, and the Glencoe School until 1973, then she joined the faculty of the Llewellyn School as a first and second grade teacher. Dr. Perry taught at the Llewellyn School until 1979. She spent the 1979 to 1980 academic year as a grade art education instructor at the University of Oregon at Eugene.
Dr. Perry returned to Portland at Mount Tabor Middle School in 1980. She continued to teach at Mount Tabor until her retirement in 2005 teaching art, language arts, reading/literature, and social studies. She was involved in curriculum development and assessment. She was an invited four-time participant in the Getty Center for Arts in Education conference. She worked on developing the direct writing assessment for the State of Oregon and directed the writing assessment for Portland Public Schools.
As an avid skier, Dr. Perry became a level 3 certified ski instructor. She taught for Timberline Ski School from 1960 until purchasing The Powder Hound ski school, a weekend school, in the 1980s. She represented the Pacific Northwest Ski Association, a division of the United States Ski Association, as a member in the Austrian Ski School Invitational seminar in 1983.
