Dr. Nelson is renowned as a nurse and a nursing educator with almost 50 years of service to her patients and students. Her interest in nursing began after witnessing her father and younger brother receive compassionate hospital care after medical emergencies. She initially pursued an education at the University of Nebraska, earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1972. She subsequently obtained a Master of Science in Nursing at the University of Wisconsin in 1974. Graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy by the University of North Carolina in 1994, Dr. Nelson concluded her academic efforts with postgraduate coursework with Pamela Hinds from 1997 to 2003, supported by a grant awarded from the Oncology Nursing Foundation/Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories.
From 1972 to 1973, Dr. Nelson began her career as a staff nurse at York General Hospital. She has found much success with the University of Nebraska College of Nursing in a number of positions since 1974, including as an assistant professor of nursing, a second-year coordinator, an associate professor and a past president of the faculty senate. Since 1998, she has excelled a tenured associate professor at the University of Nebraska. Notably, Dr. Nelson was inducted into the aforementioned school's Interprofessional Academy of Educators in 2016.
Furthermore, Dr. Nelson is active as the coordinator of the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing History Museum. She has been the recipient of numerous awards for her exemplary clinical and academic work, including a 2018 Heritage Award from the UNMC Alumni Association and a 40 Year Service Award from the University of Nebraska Medical Center and a National Research Service Award from the National Institutes of Health. Moreover, Dr. Nelson is a member of the American Nurses Association, the Society for Pediatric Nursing and the Association of Pediatric Oncology Nurses, where she has held a variety of administrative roles.
