MacGregor, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. MacGregor is recognized for his many years' experience in his professional field and for his achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected based on current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all considered during the selection process.
A renowned expert on product safety evaluation and regulation, Dr. MacGregor has garnered a laudable reputation in his leadership positions at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), SRI International (the former Stanford Research Institute), and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In addition to his leadership positions at the above institutions, he has an international reputation for his important role in the development of testing methods for the evaluation of genetic damage that are currently recognized by regulatory agencies throughout the world. Since 2004 he has been a consultant and principal with Toxicology Consulting Services in Bonita Springs, Florida, and Arnold, Maryland, where he consults for major international companies and government and nonprofit organizations on safety issues related to foods, dietary supplements, and pharmaceutical products.
Dr. MacGregor's leadership positions at the FDA include Director of the Office of Testing and Research at the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research in Rockville, MD, and Director of the Washington Office of the National Center for Toxicological Research. Prior to that he was Director of the Toxicology and Metabolism Laboratory at SRI International in Menlo Park, CA, and Research Leader of the Food Safety Program at the USDA Western Regional Research Center in Albany, CA. He has held academic appointments at the University of California, Berkeley and has lectured at the University of San Francisco and at professional training courses at the FDA, has been an invited speaker at many national and International toxicology meetings, and has served on the Editorial Boards of three scientific journals.
Published extensively, Dr. MacGregor has contributed over 320 scientific journal articles, abstracts, and book chapters in the areas of general and genetic toxicology. He has recently published a book for the public about natural product safety entitled "A Natural Mistake: Why natural, organic, and botanical products are not as safe as you think", which discusses why it is a mistake to assume that natural, organic, and botanical products are inherently safer and more healthful than those produced using synthetic chemicals and pesticides. The book shows how this mistake has led to often-unrecognized serious health issues, provides advice to consumers for more rational dietary and pharmaceutical choices, and appeals to regulators for provision of more uniform safety standards for dietary constituents, pharmaceuticals, and botanical supplements.
Throughout his professional journey, Dr. MacGregor has received numerous awards and recognition for his achievements. He was the valedictorian of his high school class at Carmel High School and received the Bausch and Lomb Science Award for outstanding potential in science, then received a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Union College in 1965, after which he received an NIH graduate training award that supported his Ph.D. training in Toxicology at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. After completing a postdoctoral fellowship at the department of pharmacology and toxicology at the University of California Medical Center in San Francisco in 1972, he received many awards throughout his career, including the USDA Certificate of Merit (1984), the Alexander Hollaender award for contributions to the field of environmental mutagenesis related to the protection of human health (1995), the CDER Distinguished Service Award (2001), the FDA Distinguished Service Award (2004), and the Genetic Toxicology Association Excellence in Science Award (2010).
He has been an active participant in many scientific societies and served as Treasurer and then President of the Environmental Mutagenesis and Genomics Society, President of the Regulatory and Safety Evaluation Specialty Section of the Society of Toxicology, President of the Association of Government Toxicologists, and President of the Genetic and Environmental Toxicology Association of Northern California.
