Having accrued more than 40 years of inimitable expertise within academia, Dr. Dickson garnered a laudable reputation at the department of sociology at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS), where she was bestowed with the distinguished title of an Associate Professor Emeritus in 2016. During her years as a faculty member, she notably chaired the department on several occasions and enthusiastically introduced thousands of students to sociology, a discipline she loved. Specifically, she taught and conducted extensive research in the areas of the sociology of poverty, family and education, while always emphasizing the intersections of race, class and gender. Additionally, Dr. Dickson has studied the shifting relationship and family formation strategies of African Americans. Prior to her commitments at UCCS, she held teaching appointments at Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois, Auburn University in Alabama, and Hampton University in Virginia.
Dr. Dickson previously worked on behalf of the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration Environmental Research Laboratory in Boulder as an equal employment opportunity specialist between 1975 and 1976. She later served as a retention specialist for the University of Colorado in Boulder and provided her expertise as a research consultant on behalf of the Training and Research Assistance Corporation in Denver, as well as the Research Triangle Institute in North Carolina. As an experienced researcher, Dr. Dickson has contributed several publications, ranging from "The Future of Family in Black America" in 1992 to "The Love Joes Cohort: A New Face of the Black Middle Class?" with co-author Kris Marsh in a 2008 edition of Black Women, Gender and Families. She has also contributed to her field by conducting research and delivering presentations on topics such as inter- and intra-racial couples, single parent families, and tattooing behavior among undergraduate students.
A graduate of Western Kentucky University, Dr. Dickson received both a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts in 1970 and 1972, respectively. She later attained a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Colorado, Boulder in 1982. To remain aware of developments effecting her field, Dr. Dickson maintained her professional alignment with such organizations as the American Sociological Association, the Colorado Women's Studies Association, Sociologists for Women in Society, the Association of Black Sociologists and the National Council of Black Studies, where she was the 2009 recipient of the Ida B. Wells & Cheikh Anta Diop Award. Moreover, she served on the editorial board of the Western Social Science Association. Her community participation included serving on Boards of both the Colorado Springs Urban League and the Rocky Mountain Women's Film Festival.
